Nor at that period could it be said that they were multiplied more than their fathers, or, as the Hebrew imports, made greater than their fathers, when after their return they were tributary to the Persians, and afterwards fell under the power of the Greeks, under whom they suffered much; nor have their hearts, as a nation, yet been circumcised. 5 will circumcise.10:16; Jer 4:4; 9:26; 32:39; Eze 11:19,20; 36:26,27; Joh 3:3-7Ro 2:28,29; 11:26; 2Co 5:17; Col 2:11to love the Lord.6:5; Ex 20:6; Mt 22:37; Ro 8:28; 1Co 8:3; Jas 1:12; 2:5; 1Jo 4:71Jo 4:16-19; 5:3,4Psalms 68:22

Lowth, is the great increase and flourishing state of the church of God, by the conversion and accession of the heathen nations to it; which is set forth in such ample and exalted terms, as plainly shew that the full completion of this prophecy is reserved for future times. This subject is displayed in the most splendid colours, under a great variety of images highly poetical, designed to give a general idea of the glories of that perfect state of the church of God, which we are taught to expect in the latter times; when the fulness of the Gentiles shall come in, and the Jews shall be converted and gathered from their dispersions, and "the kingdom of this world shall become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ." thy gates.Ne 13:19; Re 21:25forces. or, wealth.5; *marg: 41:11; 54:15; Ps 2:12; Da 2:35,44,45; Zec 12:2-4; 14:12-19Mt 21:44; Lu 19:27; Re 2:26,27 The glory. That is, the cedar; and as the choice timber of Lebanon beautified Solomon's temple, that footstool of Jehovah; so shall the peculiar advantages of every nation, and of every description of men, concur to beautify the church of Christ, which He has determined to make glorious. The language then becomes more energetic, and the images employed more grand and magnificent; and nothing can answer to the glorious description but some future exalted state of the church on earth, or the church triumphant in heaven; though several expressions seem to limit it to the church below. 35:2; 41:19,20; 55:13; Ho 14:6,7to beautify.Ezr 7:27the place.66:1; 1Ch 28:2; Ps 96:6; 132:7 sons.14:1,2; 45:14; 49:23; Jer 16:19; Re 3:9The city.62:12; Ps 87:3; Heb 12:22; Re 3:12; 14:1 thou.49:14-23; 54:6-14; Ps 78:60,61; Jer 30:17; La 1:1,2; Re 11:2,15-17a joy.35:10; 61:7; Jer 33:11 suck the milk.49:23; 61:6; 66:11,12thou shalt know.43:3,4; 66:14; Eze 34:30 brass.30:26; 1Ki 10:21-27; Zec 12:8; Heb 11:40; 2Pe 3:13make.1:26; 32:1,2 Violence.2:4; 11:9; Ps 72:3-7; Mic 4:3; Zec 9:8but.26:1; Re 19:1-6 sun.Ps 36:9; Re 21:23; 22:5thy God.Ps 3:3; 4:2; 62:7; Zec 2:5; Lu 2:32 sun.Ps 27:1; 84:11; Am 8:9; Mal 4:2the days.25:8; 30:19; 35:10; Re 7:15-17; 21:4 people.4:3,4; 51:2; 62:4; Zec 14:20,21; 2Pe 3:13; Re 21:27inherit.Ps 37:11,22; Mt 5:5; Re 5:10; 21:7the branch.29:23; 43:7; 45:11; 61:3; Ps 92:13; Mt 15:13; Joh 15:2; Eph 2:10that I.43:21; 44:23; 49:3; Eph 1:6,12; 2:7; 2Th 1:10 little.66:8; Da 2:35,44; Mt 13:31,32; Ac 2:41; 5:14; Re 7:9I the Lord.5:19; Hab 2:3; Lu 18:7; Heb 10:36; 2Pe 3:8Isaiah 61

Though, as Bp. Lowth observes, this prophecy must have its accomplishment, there is no necessity for supposing that it has been already accomplished. There are prophecies which intimate a great slaughter of the enemies of God and his people, which remain to be fulfilled: those in Eze ch. 38, and Re ch. 20 are called Gog and Magog. Isaiah has, with singular propriety, been denominated the Evangelical Prophet, on account of the number and variety of his prophecies concerning the advent and character, the ministry and preaching, the sufferings and death, and the extensive and permanent kingdom of the Messiah. So explicit and determinate are his predictions, as well as so numerous, that he seems to speak rather of things past than of events yet future; and he may be rather called an evangelist than a prophet. Though later critics, especially those on the continent, have expended much labour and learning in order to rob the prophet of his title; yet no one, whose mind is unprejudiced, can be at a loss in applying select portions of these prophecies to the mission and character of Jesus Christ, and to the events in his history which they are cited to illustrate by the sacred writers of the New Testament. In fact, his prophecies concerning the Messiah seem almost to anticipate the Gospel history; so clearly do they predict his Divine character. (Compare ch. 7:14 with Mat. 1:18-23, and Luke 1:27-35; ch. 6:; 9:6; 35:4; 40:5, 9, 19; 42: 6-8; 61:1, with Lu. 4:18; ch. 62:11; 63:1-4;) his miracles, (ch. 35:5, 6;) his peculiar character and virtues, (ch. 11:2, 3; 40:11; 43:1-3;) his rejection, (Compare ch. 6:9-12 with Mar. 13:14; ch. 7:14, 15; 53:3;) his sufferings for our sins, (ch. 50:6; 53:4-11;) his death and burial, (ch. 53:8, 9;) his victory over death, (ch. 25:8; 53:10, 12;) his final glory, (ch. 49:7, 22, 33; 52:13-15; 53:4, 5;) and the establishment, increase, and perfection of his kingdom, (ch. 2:2-4; 9:2, 7; 11:4-10; 16:5; 29:18-24; 32:1; 40:4, 5; 42:4; 46:13; 49:9-13; 51:3-6; 53:6-10; 55:1-3; 59:16-21; 60:; 61:1-5; 65:25;) each specifically pointed out, and pourtrayed with the most striking and discriminating characters. It is impossible, indeed, to reflect on these, and on the whole chain of his illustrious prophecies, and not be sensible that they furnish the most incontestable evidence in support of Christianity. The style of Isaiah has been universally admired as the most perfect model of elegance and sublimity; and as distinguished for all the magnificence, and for all the sweetness of the Hebrew language.Jeremiah 23:7-8
