Acts 13:4-52

Barnabas and Saul on Cyprus

4So, being sent out aby the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. 5When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God bin the synagogues of the Jews. And they had cJohn to dassist them. 6When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain emagician, fa Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7He was with gthe proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8But Elymas the hmagician (for that is the meaning of his name) iopposed them, seeking to turn jthe proconsul away from the faith. 9But Saul, who was also called Paul, kfilled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10and said, “You lson of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and mvillainy, will you not stop nmaking crooked othe straight paths of the Lord? 11And now, behold, pthe hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking qpeople to lead him by the hand. 12Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at rthe teaching of the Lord.

Paul and Barnabas at Antioch in Pisidia

13Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And sJohn left them and returned tto Jerusalem, 14but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And uon the Sabbath day vthey went into the synagogue and sat down. 15After wthe reading from xthe Law and the Prophets, ythe rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any zword of encouragement for the people, say it.” 16So Paul stood up, and aamotioning with his hand said:

Men of Israel and abyou who fear God, listen.
17 acThe God of this people Israel adchose our fathers and aemade the people great afduring their stay in the land of Egypt, and agwith uplifted arm he led them out of it. 18And for about ahforty years aihe put up with
Some manuscripts  he carried (compare Deuteronomy 1:31)
them in the wilderness.
19And akafter destroying alseven nations in the land of Canaan, amhe gave them their land as an inheritance. 20All this took about 450 years. And after that anhe gave them judges until aoSamuel the prophet. 21Then apthey asked for a king, and God gave them Saul aqthe son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22And arwhen he had removed him, ashe raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, at‘I have found in David the son of Jesse aua man after my heart, avwho will do all my will.’ 23 awOf this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel axa Savior, Jesus, ayas he promised. 24Before his coming, azJohn had proclaimed baa baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25And as John was finishing his course, bbhe said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

26Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you bcwho fear God, to us has been sent bdthe message of bethis salvation. 27For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because bfthey did not recognize him nor understand bgthe utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, bhfulfilled them by condemning him. 28And bithough they found in him no guilt worthy of death, bjthey asked Pilate to have him executed. 29And when bkthey had carried out all that was written of him, blthey took him down from bmthe tree and laid him in a tomb. 30But bnGod raised him from the dead, 31and for many days bohe appeared to those bpwho had come up with him bqfrom Galilee to Jerusalem, brwho are now bshis witnesses to the people. 32And we bring you the good news btthat what God promised to the fathers, 33 buthis he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,

bv“‘You are my Son,
today I have begotten you.’
34And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, bw, bxno more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,

“‘I will give you bythe holy and sure blessings of David.’
35Therefore he says also in another psalm,

bz“‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’
36For David, after he had caserved the purpose of God in his own generation, cbfell asleep and ccwas laid with his fathers and saw corruption, 37but he whom cdGod raised up did not see corruption. 38Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, cethat through this man cfforgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39and by him cgeveryone who believes is freed
Greek justified; twice in this verse
from everything cifrom which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
40Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:

41 cj“‘Look, you scoffers,
be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’”
42As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. 43And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and ckdevout clconverts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them cmto continue in cnthe grace of God.

44The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 coBut cpwhen the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with cqjealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, crreviling him. 46And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God csbe spoken first to you. ctSince you thrust it aside and judge yourselves cuunworthy of eternal life, behold, we cvare turning to the Gentiles. 47 cwFor so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

cx“‘I have made you cya light for the Gentiles,
that you may czbring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
48And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and daglorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 dbBut the Jews
Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time
incited the devout ddwomen of high standing and the leading men of the city, destirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and dfdrove them out of their district.
51But they dgshook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. 52And the disciples were filled dhwith joy and diwith the Holy Spirit.

Acts 14

Paul and Barnabas at Iconium

1Now at Iconium djthey entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed. 2 dkBut the dlunbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against dmthe brothers.
Or  brothers and sisters
3So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for dothe Lord, who bore witness to dpthe word of his grace, dqgranting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. 4But the people of the city drwere divided; dssome sided with the Jews and some with the apostles. 5When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, dtto mistreat them and duto stone them, 6they learned of it and dvfled to dwLystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country, 7and there they continued to preach the gospel.

Paul and Barnabas at Lystra

8Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was dxcrippled from birth and had never walked. 9He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and dyseeing that he had faith to be made well,
Or be saved
10said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he easprang up and began walking. 11And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, eb“The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12Barnabas they called ecZeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13And the priest of edZeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and eewanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they eftore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15Men, egwhy are you doing these things? We also are men, ehof like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that eiyou should turn from these ejvain things to eka living God, elwho made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 16In past generations he emallowed all the nations ento walk in their own ways. 17Yet eohe did not leave himself without witness, for he epdid good by eqgiving you rains from heaven and erfruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with esfood and etgladness.” 18Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.

Paul Stoned at Lystra

19 euBut Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, evthey stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. 21When they had preached the gospel to that city and had ewmade many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 exstrengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them eyto continue in ezthe faith, and saying that fathrough many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. 23And when they had fbappointed fcelders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting fdthey committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Paul and Barnabas Return to Antioch in Syria

24Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia, 26and from there they sailed to Antioch, fewhere they had been ffcommended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled. 27And when they arrived and gathered the church together, fgthey declared all that God had done with them, and fhhow he had fiopened fja door of faith to the Gentiles. 28And they remained no little time with the disciples.
