Psalms 78:34

     33-39. Though there were partial reformations after chastisement, and God, in pity, withdrew His hand for a time, yet their general conduct was rebellious, and He was thus provoked to waste and destroy them, by long and fruitless wandering in the desert.

Proverbs 8:17

     17. early—or, "diligently," which may include the usual sense of early in life.

Proverbs 13:24

     24. spareth—or, "withholds."

      rod—of correction.

      hateth—or, acts as if he hated him (compare Pr 3:12; 8:36).

      chasteneth . . . betimes—or, "diligently seeks for him all useful discipline."

Isaiah 26:9

     9. With, . . . soul . . . I—literally, "I . . . my soul," in apposition; the faithful Jews here speak individually. The overthrow of the foe and the restoration of the Jews are to follow upon prayer on the part of the latter and of all God's people (Isa 62:1-4, 6, 7; Ps 102:13-17).

      in the night— (Ps 63:6; So 3:1).

      world . . . learn . . . righteousness—the remnant left after judgments (Ps 58:10, 11; Zec 14:16).

Hosea 5:15

     15. return to my place—that is, withdraw My favor.

      till they acknowledge their offence—The Hebrew is, "till they suffer the penalty of their guilt." Probably "accepting the punishment of their guilt" (compare Zec 11:5) is included in the idea, as English Version translates. Compare Le 26:40, 41; Jer 29:12, 13; Eze 6:9; 20:43; 36:31.

      seek my face—that is, seek My favor (Pr 29:26, Margin).

      in . . . affliction . . . seek me early—that is, diligently; rising up before dawn to seek Me (Ps 119:147; compare Ps 78:34).
