The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

1 The book of the genealogy of ^{▼▼Heb Yeshua (Joshua), meaning Yahweh saves}Jesus ^{▼▼Messiah}Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham ^{▼▼Lit fathered, so in genealogy}was the father of Isaac,
and Isaac was the father of Jacob,
and Jacob was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Judas; names of people in the Old Testament are given in their Old Testament form}Judah and his brothers.
3 And Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar,
and Perez was the father of Hezron,
and Hezron was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Aram}Ram.
4 And Ram was the father of Amminadab,
and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon,
and Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5 And Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,
and Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth,
and Obed was the father of Jesse.
6 And Jesse was the father of David the king.
And David was the father of Solomon by ^{▼▼Lit her of Uriah}the wife of Uriah.
7 And Solomon was the father of Rehoboam,
and Rehoboam was the father of Abijah,
and Abijah was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Asaph}Asa.
8 And Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat,
and Jehoshaphat was the father of ^{▼▼Also Gr for Jehoram in 2 Kin 8:16, cf. 1 Chr 3:11}Joram,
and Joram was the father of Uzziah.
9 And Uzziah was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Joatham}Jotham,
and Jotham was the father of Ahaz,
and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10 And Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh,
and Manasseh was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Amos}Amon,
and Amon was the father of Josiah.
11 And Josiah was the father of ^{▼▼Jehoiachin in 2 Kin 24:15}Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12 And after the deportation to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Salathiel}Shealtiel,
and Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13 And Zerubbabel was the father of ^{▼▼Gr Abioud, usually spelled Abiud}Abihud,
and Abihud was the father of Eliakim,
and Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14 And Azor was the father of Zadok,
and Zadok was the father of Achim,
and Achim was the father of Eliud.
15 And Eliud was the father of Eleazar,
and Eleazar was the father of Matthan,
and Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16 And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called ^{▼▼Messiah}Christ.
17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to ^{▼▼Messiah}the Christ, fourteen generations.

The Conception and Birth of Jesus

18 Now the birth of Jesus ^{▼▼The Messiah}Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been ^{▼▼The first stage of marriage in ancient Jewish culture, usually lasting for a year before the wedding night, more legal than an engagement}betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned ^{▼▼Or to divorce her}to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the ^{▼▼In OT, Yahweh, cf. 2 Kin 1:3}Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for ^{▼▼Lit that which}the One who has been ^{▼▼Lit begotten}conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for ^{▼▼Lit He Himself}He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this ^{▼▼Lit has happened}took place in order that what was spoken by the ^{▼▼In OT, Yahweh, cf. Is 7:10}Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name ^{▼▼Or Emmanuel}Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” 24 And Joseph got up from his sleep and did as the angel of the ^{▼▼In OT, Yahweh, cf. 2 Kin 1:3}Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 ^{▼▼Lit and was not knowing her}but kept her a virgin until she ^{▼▼Or bore a Son, cf. 1:21, 23}gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
