15 the Lord.{Yehowah elohey haroochoth lechol basar,} "Jehovah, the God of the spirits of all flesh." This address sufficiently proves, that this holy man believed man to be compounded of flesh and spirit, and that these principles are perfectly distinct. Either the materiality of the soul is a human fable, or, if it be a true doctrine, Moses did not pray under the influence of the Divine Spirit. There is a similar form of expression in ch. 16:22: "O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh;" and in Job 12:10, "In whose hand is the soul {nephesh} of all living; and the spirit {rooach} of all flesh of man." These seem decisive proofs, among many others, that the Old Testament teaches that there is an immortal spirit in man; for though {rooach} sometimes denotes breath or wind, yet it certainly has not that signification here, nor in the other passages cited. the God.16:22; Heb 12:9set a man.De 31:14; 1Sa 12:13; 1Ki 5:5; Jer 3:15; 23:4,5; Eze 34:11-16,23Eze 37:24; Mt 9:38; Joh 10:11; Ac 20:28; 1Pe 5:2-4 go out.De 31:2; 1Sa 8:20; 18:13; 2Sa 5:2; 1Ki 3:7; 2Ch 1:10; Joh 10:3,4,9as sheep.1Ki 22:17; 2Ch 18:16; Eze 34:5; Zec 10:2; 13:7; Mt 9:36; 10:6Mt 15:24; Mr 6:34; 1Pe 2:25 Take thee.11:28; 13:8,16; Ex 17:9; De 3:28; 31:7,8,23; 34:9a man.11:17; Ge 41:38; Jud 3:10; 11:29; 1Sa 16:13,14,18; Da 5:14Joh 3:34; Ac 6:3; 1Co 12:4-11lay.23; De 34:9; Ac 6:6; 8:15-19; 13:3; 19:6; 1Ti 4:14; 5:22; Heb 6:2 give him.De 31:7; Lu 9:1-5; 10:2-11; Ac 20:28-31; Col 4:17; 1Ti 5:211Ti 6:13-17; 2Ti 4:1-6 put some.11:17,28,29; 1Sa 10:6,9; 2Ki 2:9,10,15; 1Ch 29:23,25may be.Jos 1:16-18 he shall.Jos 9:14; Jud 1:1; 20:18,23,26-28; 1Sa 22:10; 23:9; 28:6; 30:7Urim.Ex 28:30; Le 8:8; De 33:8; 1Sa 28:6; Ezr 2:63; Ne 7:65at his word.17; Jos 9:14; 1Sa 22:10-15 22 19; De 3:28; 31:7,8Numbers 34:19

Heb. lie down.{Shochaiv,} "lying down:" it signifies to rest, take rest in sleep, and metaphorically, to die. Though much stress cannot be safely laid upon this expression to prove the immortality of the soul, or that the people, in the time of Moses, had a distinct notion of its separate existence; yet is was understood in this sense by Jonathan, who paraphrases the words thus: "Thou shalt lie down in the dust with thy fathers; and thy soul {nishmatoch) shall be laid up in the treasury of the life to come, with thy fathers."
