Deuteronomy 32:15

15 “But a  Jeshurun grew fat, and b  kicked;
c  you grew fat, stout, and sleek;
d  then he forsook God e  who made him
and scoffed at f  the Rock of his salvation.

Deuteronomy 32:20

20And he said g  ‘I will hide my face from them;
I will see what their end will be,
for they are a perverse generation,
children in whom is no faithfulness.

2 Kings 17:7-23

Exile Because of Idolatry

7And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the  Lord their God, h  who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods 8 i  and walked in the customs of the nations whom the  Lord drove out before the people of Israel j  and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. 9And the people of Israel did secretly against the  Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, k  from watchtower to fortified city. 10They set up for themselves l  pillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, 11and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the  Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the  Lord to anger, 12and they served idols, m  of which the  Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this.” 13Yet the  Lord n  warned Israel and Judah o  by every prophet p  and every seer, saying, q  Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

14But they would not listen, r  but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the  Lord their God. 15They despised his statutes s  and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after t  false idols u  and became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the v   Lord had commanded them that they should not do like them. 16And they abandoned all the commandments of the  Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of w  two calves; and they x  made an Asherah and y  worshiped all the host of heaven and served z  Baal. 17 aa  And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings
Or made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire
and used ac  divination and ad  omens and ae  sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the  Lord, provoking him to anger.
18Therefore the  Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but af  the tribe of Judah only.

19 ag  Judah also did not keep the commandments of the  Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced. 20And the  Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them ah  and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

21 ai  When he had torn Israel from the house of David aj  they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. And Jeroboam drove Israel from following the  Lord ak  and made them commit great sin. 22The people of Israel walked in all the sins that Jeroboam did. They did not depart from them, 23until the  Lord removed Israel out of his sight, al  as he had spoken by all his servants the prophets. am  So Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day.

2 Kings 22:13-17

13Go, inquire of the  Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is an  the wrath of the  Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”

14So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of ao  Tikvah, son of ap  Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in aq  the Second Quarter), and they talked with her. 15And she said to them, “Thus says the  Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 16Thus says the  Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the book that the king of Judah has read. 17 ar  Because they have forsaken me and have made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore as  my wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.

Isaiah 1:2-5

The Wickedness of Judah

2 at  Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O au  earth;
for the  Lord has spoken:
Children
Or Sons; also verse 4
aw  have I reared and brought up,
but they have rebelled against me.
3The ox ax  knows its owner,
and the donkey its master’s crib,
but Israel does ay  not know,
my people do not understand.”
4 Ah, sinful nation,
a people laden with iniquity,
az  offspring of evildoers,
children who deal corruptly!
They have forsaken the  Lord,
they have ba  despised bb  the Holy One of Israel,
they are utterly bc  estranged.
5 Why will you still be bd  struck down?
Why will you be  continue to rebel?
The whole head is sick,
and the whole heart faint.

Isaiah 50:1

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

1 Thus says the  Lord:
Where is bf  your mother’s certificate of divorce,
with which bg  I sent her away?
Or bh  which of my creditors is it
to whom I have sold you?
bi  Behold, for your iniquities you were sold,
and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

Isaiah 59:1-3

Evil and Oppression

1 Behold, bj  the  Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
2 bk  but your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
3 bl  For your hands are defiled with blood
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies;
your tongue mutters wickedness.

Isaiah 59:12-15

12For our transgressions are multiplied before you,
and our sins testify against us;
for our transgressions are with us,
and we know our iniquities:
13transgressing, and denying the  Lord,
and turning back from following our God,
bm  speaking oppression and revolt,
conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words.

Judgment and Redemption

14 bn  Justice is turned back,
and righteousness stands far away;
for truth has stumbled in the public squares,
and uprightness cannot enter.
15Truth is lacking,
and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.
The  Lord saw it, and it displeased him
Hebrew  and it was evil in his eyes

that there was no justice.
