Isaiah 10:5-6

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria

5 Ah, Assyria, a  the rod of my anger;
the staff in their hands is my fury!
6Against a b  godless nation I send him,
and against the people of my wrath I command him,
to take c  spoil and seize plunder,
and to d  tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Isaiah 45:1-2

Cyrus, God’s Instrument

1 Thus says the  Lord to e  his anointed, to Cyrus,
f  whose right hand I have grasped,
to subdue nations before him
and g  to loose the belts of kings,
to open doors before him
that gates may not be closed:
2I will go before you
and h  level the exalted places
Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scroll, Septuagint  level the mountains

j  I will break in pieces the doors of bronze
and cut through the bars of iron,

Jeremiah 50:14-15

14 k  Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around,
l  all you who bend the bow;
shoot at her, spare no arrows,
m  for she has sinned against the  Lord.
15 n  Raise a shout against her all around;
she has surrendered;
her bulwarks have fallen;
o  her walls are thrown down.
For p  this is the vengeance of the  Lord:
take vengeance on her;
q  do to her as she has done.

Jeremiah 51:6-25

6 r  Flee from the midst of Babylon;
let every one save his life!
s  Be not cut off in her punishment,
t  for this is the time of the  Lord’s vengeance,
the repayment he is rendering her.
7Babylon was u  a golden cup in the  Lord’s hand,
v  making all the earth drunken;
w  the nations drank of her wine;
therefore the nations went mad.
8 x  Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken;
y  wail for her!
z  Take balm for her pain;
perhaps she may be healed.
9We would have healed Babylon,
but she was not healed.
aa  Forsake her, and ab  let us go
each to his own country,
for ac  her judgment has reached up to heaven
and has been lifted up even to the skies.
10 ad  The  Lord has brought about our vindication;
ae  come, let us declare in Zion
the work of the  Lord our God.
11 af  Sharpen the arrows!
Take up the shields!

ag  The  Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of ah  the Medes, because ai  his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, aj  for that is the vengeance of the  Lord, the vengeance for ak  his temple.

12 al  “Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon;
am  make the watch strong;
set up watchmen;
prepare the ambushes;
an  for the  Lord has both planned and done
what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
13 ao  O you who dwell by many waters,
rich in treasures,
your end has come;
the thread of your life is cut.
14 ap  The  Lord of hosts has sworn by himself:
Surely I will fill you with men aq  as many as locusts,
ar  and they shall raise the shout of victory over you.
15 as  “It is he who made the earth by his power,
who established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
16When he utters his voice there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain,
and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
17Every man is stupid and without knowledge;
every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
for his images are false,
and there is no breath in them.
18They are worthless, a work of delusion;
at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
19Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob,
for he is the one who formed all things,
and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance;
the  Lord of hosts is his name.
20 “You are my hammer and weapon of war:
with you I at  break nations in pieces;
with you I destroy kingdoms;
21with you I break in pieces the horse and his rider;
with you I break in pieces the chariot and the charioteer;
22with you I break in pieces man and woman;
with you I break in pieces au  the old man and the youth;
with you I break in pieces av  the young man and the young woman;
23with you I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock;
with you I break in pieces the farmer and his team;
with you I break in pieces aw  governors and commanders.

24 ax  “I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea before your very eyes for all the evil that they have done in Zion, declares the  Lord.

25 Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain,

declares the  Lord,
which destroys the whole earth;
I will stretch out my hand against you,
and roll you down from the crags,
ay  and make you a burnt mountain.

Joel 2:1-11

The Day of the  Lord

1 az  Blow a trumpet in ba  Zion;
sound an alarm on bb  my holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for bc  the day of the  Lord is coming; it is near,
2 bd  a day of darkness and gloom,
be  a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains
bf  a great and powerful people;
bg  their like has never been before,
nor will be again after them
through the years of all generations.
3 bh  Fire devours before them,
and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like bi  the garden of Eden before them,
but bj  behind them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.
4 bk  Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,
and like war horses they run.
5 bl  As with the rumbling of chariots,
they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of bm  a flame of fire
devouring the stubble,
bn  like a powerful army
drawn up for battle.
6 Before them peoples are in anguish;
bo  all faces grow pale.
7Like warriors they charge;
like soldiers they scale the wall.
They march each on his way;
they do not swerve from their paths.
8They do not jostle one another;
bp  each marches in his path;
they burst through the weapons
and are not halted.
9 bq  They leap upon the city,
they run upon the walls,
br  they climb up into the houses,
bs  they enter through the windows bt  like a thief.
10 bu  The earth quakes before them;
the heavens tremble.
bv  The sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.
11 bw  The  Lord utters his voice
before bx  his army,
for his camp is exceedingly great;
by  he who executes his word is powerful.
bz  For the day of the  Lord is ca  great and very awesome;
cb  who can endure it?

Joel 2:25

25I will restore
Or pay back
to you the years
that cd  the swarming locust has eaten,
ce  the hopper cf  the destroyer, and cg  the cutter,
ch  my great army, which I sent among you.

Revelation of John 18:8

8For this reason her plagues will come ci  in a single day,
death and mourning and famine,
and cj  she will be burned up with fire;
for ck  mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”
