Matthew 16:13-27

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 a  Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, “Some say b  John the Baptist, others say c  Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15He said to them, But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter replied d  You are e  the Christ f  the Son of g  the living God.” 17And Jesus answered him, h  Blessed are you, i  Simon Bar-Jonah! For j  flesh and blood has not revealed this to you k  but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you l  you are Peter, and m  on this rock
The Greek words for  Peter and  rock sound similar
I will build my church, and o  the gates of p  hell
Greek  the gates of Hades
shall not prevail against it.
19I will give you r  the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and s  whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed
Or  shall have been bound . . . shall have been loosed
in heaven.”
20 u  Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 v  From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that w  he must go to Jerusalem and x  suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on y  the third day be raised. 22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord!
Or “[May God be] merciful to you, Lord!”
This shall never happen to you.”
23But he turned and said to Peter, aa  Get behind me, Satan! You are ab  a hindrance
Greek stumbling block
to me. For you ad  are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him ae  deny himself and af  take up his cross and follow me. 25For ag  whoever would save his life
The same Greek word can mean either soul or  life, depending on the context; twice in this verse and twice in verse 26
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
26For ai  what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or aj  what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 ak  For the Son of Man is going to come with al  his angels in the glory of his Father, and am  then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

Luke 9:18-26

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 an  Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19And they answered, ao  John the Baptist. But others say, ap  Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20Then he said to them, But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, aq  “The Christ of God.”

21 ar  And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 as  saying, at  “The Son of Man must au  suffer many things and av  be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on aw  the third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23And he said to all, If anyone would come after me, let him ax  deny himself and ay  take up his cross az  daily and follow me. 24For ba  whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 bb  For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26For bc  whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed bd  when he comes in be  his glory and the glory of the Father and of bf  the holy angels.
