Matthew 22:23-33

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23The same day a  Sadducees came to him, b  who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24saying, “Teacher, Moses said c  If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27After them all, the woman died. 28In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

29But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong d  because you know neither the Scriptures nor e  the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither f  marry nor g  are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31And as for the resurrection of the dead h  have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 i  I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33And when the crowd heard it, j  they were astonished at his teaching.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

27There came to him k  some Sadducees l  those who deny that there is a resurrection, 28and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us m  that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man

must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
29Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. 30And the second 31and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. 32Afterward the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

34And Jesus said to them, o  “The sons of this age p  marry and q  are given in marriage, 35but those who are r  considered worthy to attain to s  that age and to the resurrection from the dead t  neither marry u  nor are given in marriage, 36for v  they cannot die anymore, because they are w  equal to angels and x  are y  sons of God, being z  sons

of the resurrection.
37But that the dead are raised ab  even Moses showed, in ac  the passage about the bush, where he calls ad  the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all ae  live to him.” 39Then some of the scribes af  answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40For ag  they no longer dared to ask him any question.
