wives:
“
Adah and
Zillah,
hear my
voice;
you
wives of
Lamech,
listen to what I
say:
I have
killed a
man for
wounding me,
a
young man for
striking me.

וַיֹּאמֶר לֶמֶךְ לְנָשָׁיו עָדָה וְצִלָּה שְׁמַעַן קוֹלִי נְשֵׁי לֶמֶךְ הַאְזֵנָּה אִמְרָתִי כִּי אִישׁ הָרַגְתִּי לְפִצְעִי וְיֶלֶד לְחַבֻּרָתִֽי׃

And the
child grew and was
weaned. And
Abraham made a
great feast on the
day that
Isaac was
weaned.
וַיִּגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד וַיִּגָּמַל וַיַּעַשׂ אַבְרָהָם מִשְׁתֶּה גָדוֹל בְּיוֹם הִגָּמֵל אֶת־
יִצְחָֽק׃

So
Abraham rose
early in the
morning and
took bread and a
skin of
water and
gave it to
Hagar,
putting it on her
shoulder, along with the
child, and
sent her away. And she
departed and
wandered in the
wilderness of
Beersheba.
וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם ׀
בַּבֹּקֶר וַיִּֽקַּֽח־
לֶחֶם וְחֵמַת מַיִם וַיִּתֵּן אֶל־
הָגָר שָׂם עַל־
שִׁכְמָהּ וְאֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶהָ וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתֵּתַע בְּמִדְבַּר בְּאֵר
שָֽׁבַע׃

When the
water in the
skin was
gone, she
put the
child under one of the
bushes.
וַיִּכְלוּ הַמַּיִם מִן־
הַחֵמֶת וַתַּשְׁלֵךְ אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד תַּחַת אַחַד הַשִּׂיחִֽם׃

Then she
went and
sat down opposite him a good
way off, about the distance of a
bowshot, for she
said, “Let me not
look on the
death of the
child.” And as she
sat opposite him, she
lifted up her
voice and
wept.
וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתֵּשֶׁב לָהּ
מִנֶּגֶד הַרְחֵק כִּמְטַחֲוֵי קֶשֶׁת כִּי אָֽמְרָה אַל־
אֶרְאֶה בְּמוֹת הַיָּלֶד וַתֵּשֶׁב מִנֶּגֶד וַתִּשָּׂא אֶת־
קֹלָהּ וַתֵּֽבְךְּ׃

Give me my
wives and my
children for
whom I have
served you, that I may
go,
for you
know the
service that I have
given you.”

The same
night he
arose and
took his
two wives, his
two female servants, and his
eleven children, and
crossed the
ford of the
Jabbok.
וַיָּקָם ׀
בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא וַיִּקַּח אֶת־
שְׁתֵּי נָשָׁיו וְאֶת־
שְׁתֵּי שִׁפְחֹתָיו וְאֶת־
אַחַד עָשָׂר יְלָדָיו וַֽיַּעֲבֹר אֵת מַעֲבַר יַבֹּֽק׃

And
Jacob lifted up his
eyes and
looked, and
behold,
Esau was
coming, and
four hundred men with him. So he
divided the
children among
Leah and
Rachel and the
two female servants.
וַיִּשָּׂא יַעֲקֹב עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה עֵשָׂו בָּא וְעִמּוֹ אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ וַיַּחַץ אֶת־

And he
put the
servants with their
children in
front,
then Leah with her
children, and
Rachel and
Joseph last of
all.

הַשְּׁפָחוֹת וְאֶת־
יַלְדֵיהֶן רִֽאשֹׁנָה וְאֶת־
לֵאָה וִֽילָדֶיהָ אַחֲרֹנִים וְאֶת־

And when Esau
lifted up his
eyes and
saw the
women and
children, he
said, “
Who are
these with you?” Jacob
said,
“The
children whom God has
graciously given your
servant.”

הַיְלָדִים וַיֹּאמֶר מִי־
אֵלֶּה לָּךְ

Then the
servants drew
near, they and their
children, and bowed
down.
וַתִּגַּשְׁןָ הַשְּׁפָחוֹת הֵנָּה וְיַלְדֵיהֶן וַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ׃

Leah likewise and her
children drew
near and bowed
down. And
last Joseph and
Rachel drew
near, and they bowed
down.

וַתִּגַּשׁ גַּם־
לֵאָה וִילָדֶיהָ וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ וְאַחַר נִגַּשׁ יוֹסֵף וְרָחֵל וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃

But Jacob
said to him, “My
lord knows that the
children are
frail, and that the
nursing flocks and
herds are a
care to me. If they are
driven hard for
one day,
all the
flocks will
die.
וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי יֹדֵעַ כִּֽי־
הַיְלָדִים רַכִּים וְהַצֹּאן וְהַבָּקָר עָלוֹת עָלָי וּדְפָקוּם יוֹם אֶחָד וָמֵתוּ כָּל־
הַצֹּֽאן׃

Let my
lord pass on ahead
of his
servant, and I will
lead on slowly, at the
pace of the
livestock that are
ahead of me and at the
pace of the
children, until I
come to my
lord in
Seir.”

נָא אֲדֹנִי לִפְנֵי עַבְדּוֹ וַאֲנִי אֶֽתְנָהֲלָה לְאִטִּי לְרֶגֶל הַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר־

אֲדֹנִי שֵׂעִֽירָה׃

returned to his
brothers and
said, “The
boy is gone, and I,
where shall I
go?”
וַיָּשָׁב אֶל־
אֶחָיו וַיֹּאמַר הַיֶּלֶד אֵינֶנּוּ וַאֲנִי אָנָה אֲנִי־
בָֽא׃

And
Reuben answered them, “Did
I not tell you not to
sin against the
boy? But you did
not listen.
So now there comes a
reckoning for his
blood.”
וַיַּעַן רְאוּבֵן אֹתָם לֵאמֹר הֲלוֹא אָמַרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם ׀
לֵאמֹר אַל־
תֶּחֶטְאוּ בַיֶּלֶד וְלֹא שְׁמַעְתֶּם וְגַם־
דָּמוֹ הִנֵּה נִדְרָֽשׁ׃

And we
said to my
lord, ‘We
have a
father, an
old man,
and a
young brother, the
child of his
old age. His
brother is
dead, and he
alone is
left of his
mother’s children, and his
father loves him.’
וַנֹּאמֶר אֶל־
אֲדֹנִי יֶשׁ־לָנוּ
אָב זָקֵן וְיֶלֶד זְקֻנִים קָטָן וְאָחִיו מֵת וַיִּוָּתֵר הוּא לְבַדּוֹ לְאִמּוֹ וְאָבִיו אֲהֵבֽוֹ׃

But the
midwives feared God and did not
do as the
king of
Egypt commanded them, but let the male
children live.
וַתִּירֶאןָ הַֽמְיַלְּדֹת אֶת־
הָאֱלֹהִים וְלֹא עָשׂוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֲלֵיהֶן מֶלֶךְ מִצְרָיִם וַתְּחַיֶּיןָ אֶת־
הַיְלָדִֽים׃

So the
king of
Egypt called the
midwives and
said to them, “
Why have you
done this, and let the male
children live?”
וַיִּקְרָא מֶֽלֶךְ־
מִצְרַיִם לַֽמְיַלְּדֹת וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶן
מַדּוּעַ עֲשִׂיתֶן הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַתְּחַיֶּיןָ אֶת־
הַיְלָדִֽים׃

When she
could hide him
no longer, she
took for him a
basket made of
bulrushes and
daubed it with
bitumen and
pitch. She
put the
child in it and
placed it among the
reeds by the
river bank.
וְלֹא־
יָכְלָה עוֹד הַצְּפִינוֹ וַתִּֽקַּֽח־לוֹ
תֵּבַת גֹּמֶא וַתַּחְמְרָה בַחֵמָר וּבַזָּפֶת וַתָּשֶׂם בָּהּ
אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד וַתָּשֶׂם בַּסּוּף עַל־
שְׂפַת הַיְאֹֽר׃

When she
opened it, she
saw the
child, and
behold, the
baby was
crying. She
took pity on him and
said, “This is one of the
Hebrews’
children.”
וַתִּפְתַּח וַתִּרְאֵהוּ אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד וְהִנֵּה־
נַעַר בֹּכֶה וַתַּחְמֹל עָלָיו וַתֹּאמֶר מִיַּלְדֵי הָֽעִבְרִים זֶֽה׃

Then his
sister said to
Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I
go and
call you a
nurse from the
Hebrew women to
nurse the
child for you?”
וַתֹּאמֶר אֲחֹתוֹ אֶל־
בַּת־
פַּרְעֹה הַאֵלֵךְ וְקָרָאתִי לָךְ
אִשָּׁה מֵינֶקֶת מִן הָעִבְרִיֹּת וְתֵינִק לָךְ
אֶת־
הַיָּֽלֶד׃

And
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “
Go.” So the
girl went and
called the
child’s mother.
וַתֹּֽאמֶר־לָהּ
בַּת־
פַּרְעֹה לֵכִי וַתֵּלֶךְ הָֽעַלְמָה וַתִּקְרָא אֶת־
אֵם הַיָּֽלֶד׃

And
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “
Take this
child away and
nurse him for me, and I will
give you your
wages.” So the
woman took the
child and
nursed him.
וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ
בַּת־
פַּרְעֹה הֵילִיכִי אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד הַזֶּה וְהֵינִקִהוּ לִי
וַאֲנִי אֶתֵּן אֶת־
שְׂכָרֵךְ וַתִּקַּח הָאִשָּׁה הַיֶּלֶד וַתְּנִיקֵֽהוּ׃

When the
child grew older, she
brought him to
Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her
son. She
named him Moses, “
Because,” she
said, “I
drew him out of the
water.”
וַיִגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד וַתְּבִאֵהוּ לְבַת־
פַּרְעֹה וַֽיְהִי־לָהּ
לְבֵן וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ מֹשֶׁה וַתֹּאמֶר כִּי מִן־
הַמַּיִם מְשִׁיתִֽהוּ׃

If his
master gives him a
wife and she
bears him
sons or
daughters, the
wife and her
children shall be her
master’s, and he shall
go out alone.

אִם־
אֲדֹנָיו יִתֶּן־לוֹ
אִשָּׁה וְיָלְדָה־לוֹ
בָנִים אוֹ בָנוֹת הָאִשָּׁה וִילָדֶיהָ תִּהְיֶה לַֽאדֹנֶיהָ וְהוּא יֵצֵא בְגַפּֽוֹ׃

“When
men strive together and
hit a
pregnant woman, so that her
children come out, but there is
no harm, the one who hit her shall
surely be
fined, as the
woman’s husband shall
impose on him, and he shall
pay as the
judges determine.
וְכִֽי־
יִנָּצוּ אֲנָשִׁים וְנָגְפוּ אִשָּׁה הָרָה וְיָצְאוּ יְלָדֶיהָ וְלֹא יִהְיֶה אָסוֹן עָנוֹשׁ יֵעָנֵשׁ כַּֽאֲשֶׁר יָשִׁית עָלָיו בַּעַל הָֽאִשָּׁה וְנָתַן בִּפְלִלִֽים׃

and
both Mahlon and
Chilion died, so that the
woman was
left without her
two sons and her
husband.
וַיָּמוּתוּ גַם־
שְׁנֵיהֶם מַחְלוֹן וְכִלְיוֹן וַתִּשָּׁאֵר הָֽאִשָּׁה מִשְּׁנֵי יְלָדֶיהָ וּמֵאִישָֽׁהּ׃

Then
Naomi took the
child and
laid him on her
lap and became his
nurse.
וַתִּקַּח נָעֳמִי אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד וַתְּשִׁתֵהוּ בְחֵיקָהּ וַתְּהִי־לוֹ
לְאֹמֶֽנֶת׃

He had
two wives. The
name of the
one was
Hannah, and the
name of the
other,
Peninnah. And
Peninnah had
children, but
Hannah had
no children.

שְׁתֵּי נָשִׁים שֵׁם אַחַת חַנָּה וְשֵׁם הַשֵּׁנִית פְּנִנָּה וַיְהִי לִפְנִנָּה יְלָדִים וּלְחַנָּה אֵין יְלָדִֽים׃

Michal the
daughter of
Saul had no
child to the
day of her
death.
וּלְמִיכַל בַּת־
שָׁאוּל לֹֽא־

Then
Nathan went to his
house.
And the
Lord afflicted the
child that
Uriah’s wife bore to
David, and he
became sick.
וַיֵּלֶךְ נָתָן אֶל־
בֵּיתוֹ וַיִּגֹּף יְהוָה אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה אֵֽשֶׁת־
אוּרִיָּה לְדָוִד וַיֵּאָנַֽשׁ׃

On the
seventh day the
child died. And the
servants of
David were
afraid to
tell him that the
child was
dead, for they
said, “
Behold, while the
child was yet
alive, we
spoke to him, and he did not
listen to
us.
How then can we
say to him the
child is
dead? He may do
himself some
harm.”
וַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי וַיָּמָת הַיָּלֶד וַיִּֽרְאוּ עַבְדֵי דָוִד לְהַגִּיד לוֹ ׀
כִּי־
מֵת הַיֶּלֶד כִּי אָֽמְרוּ הִנֵּה בִהְיוֹת הַיֶּלֶד חַי דִּבַּרְנוּ אֵלָיו וְלֹא־
שָׁמַע בְּקוֹלֵנוּ וְאֵיךְ נֹאמַר אֵלָיו מֵת הַיֶּלֶד וְעָשָׂה רָעָֽה׃

But when
David saw that his
servants were
whispering together,
David understood that the
child was
dead. And
David said to his
servants, “Is the
child dead?” They
said, “He is
dead.”
וַיַּרְא דָּוִד כִּי עֲבָדָיו מִֽתְלַחֲשִׁים וַיָּבֶן דָּוִד כִּי מֵת הַיָּלֶד וַיֹּאמֶר דָּוִד אֶל־

Then his
servants said to him, “
What is
this thing that you have
done? You
fasted and
wept for the
child while he was
alive; but when the
child died, you
arose and
ate food.”

הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתָה בַּעֲבוּר הַיֶּלֶד חַי צַמְתָּ וַתֵּבְךְּ וְכַֽאֲשֶׁר מֵת הַיֶּלֶד קַמְתָּ וַתֹּאכַל לָֽחֶם׃

He
said, “While the
child was still
alive, I
fasted and
wept, for I
said,
‘
Who knows whether the
Lord will be
gracious to me, that the
child may
live?’
וַיֹּאמֶר בְּעוֹד הַיֶּלֶד חַי צַמְתִּי וָֽאֶבְכֶּה כִּי אָמַרְתִּי מִי יוֹדֵעַ יחנני יְהוָה וְחַי הַיָּֽלֶד׃

And the
king said, “
Divide the
living child in
two, and
give half to the
one and
half to the
other.”
וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ גִּזְרוּ אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד הַחַי לִשְׁנָיִם וּתְנוּ אֶֽת־
הַחֲצִי לְאַחַת וְאֶֽת־
הַחֲצִי לְאֶחָֽת׃

But he
abandoned the
counsel that the
old men gave him and
took counsel with the
young men who had
grown up with him and stood before him.
וַֽיַּעֲזֹב אֶת־
עֲצַת הַזְּקֵנִים אֲשֶׁר יְעָצֻהוּ וַיִּוָּעַץ אֶת־
הַיְלָדִים אֲשֶׁר גָּדְלוּ אִתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר הָעֹמְדִים לְפָנָֽיו׃

And the
young men who had
grown up with him
said to him, “
Thus shall you
speak to
this people who said to you, ‘Your
father made our
yoke heavy, but you
lighten it for us,’
thus shall you
say to them, ‘My
little finger is
thicker than my
father’s thighs.
וַיְדַבְּרוּ אֵלָיו הַיְלָדִים אֲשֶׁר גָּדְלוּ אִתּוֹ לֵאמֹר כֹּֽה־
תֹאמַר לָעָם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר דִּבְּרוּ אֵלֶיךָ לֵאמֹר אָבִיךָ הִכְבִּיד אֶת־
עֻלֵּנוּ וְאַתָּה הָקֵל מֵעָלֵינוּ כֹּה תְּדַבֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם קָֽטָנִּי עָבָה מִמָּתְנֵי אָבִֽי׃

he
spoke to them according to the
counsel of the
young men,
saying,
“My
father made your
yoke heavy, but I will
add to your
yoke. My
father disciplined you with
whips, but I will
discipline you with
scorpions.”
וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיהֶם כַּעֲצַת הַיְלָדִים לֵאמֹר אָבִי הִכְבִּיד אֶֽת־
עֻלְּכֶם וַאֲנִי אֹסִיף עַֽל־
עֻלְּכֶם אָבִי יִסַּר אֶתְכֶם בַּשּׁוֹטִים וַאֲנִי אֲיַסֵּר אֶתְכֶם בָּעַקְרַבִּֽים׃

Arise therefore,
go to your
house.
When your
feet enter the
city, the
child shall
die.

וְאַתְּ קוּמִי לְכִי לְבֵיתֵךְ בְּבֹאָה רַגְלַיִךְ הָעִירָה וּמֵת הַיָּֽלֶד׃

Then he
stretched himself
upon the
child three times and
cried to the
Lord, “O
Lord my
God, let this
child’s life come into him again.”
וַיִּתְמֹדֵד עַל־
הַיֶּלֶד שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים וַיִּקְרָא אֶל־
יְהוָה וַיֹּאמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהָי תָּשָׁב נָא נֶֽפֶשׁ־
הַיֶּלֶד הַזֶּה עַל־
קִרְבּֽוֹ׃

And the
Lord listened to the
voice of
Elijah. And the
life of the
child came into him again, and he
revived.
וַיִּשְׁמַע יְהוָה בְּקוֹל אֵלִיָּהוּ וַתָּשָׁב נֶֽפֶשׁ־
הַיֶּלֶד עַל־
קִרְבּוֹ וַיֶּֽחִי׃

And
Elijah took the
child and
brought him down from the
upper chamber into the
house and
delivered him to his
mother. And
Elijah said, “
See, your
son lives.”
וַיִּקַּח אֵלִיָּהוּ אֶת־
הַיֶּלֶד וַיֹּרִדֵהוּ מִן־
הָעֲלִיָּה הַבַּיְתָה וַֽיִּתְּנֵהוּ לְאִמּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלִיָּהוּ רְאִי חַי בְּנֵֽךְ׃

And he
turned around, and when he
saw them, he
cursed them in the
name of the
Lord. And
two she-bears came out of the
woods and
tore forty-two of the
boys.
וַיִּפֶן אַֽחֲרָיו וַיִּרְאֵם וַֽיְקַלְלֵם בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה וַתֵּצֶאנָה שְׁתַּיִם דֻּבִּים מִן־
הַיַּעַר וַתְּבַקַּעְנָה מֵהֶם אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁנֵי יְלָדִֽים׃

Now the
wife of
one of the
sons of the
prophets cried to
Elisha, “Your
servant my
husband is
dead, and you
know that your
servant feared the
Lord,
but the
creditor has
come to
take my
two children to be his
slaves.”
וְאִשָּׁה אַחַת מִנְּשֵׁי בְנֵֽי־
הַנְּבִיאִים צָעֲקָה אֶל־
אֱלִישָׁע לֵאמֹר עַבְדְּךָ אִישִׁי מֵת וְאַתָּה יָדַעְתָּ כִּי עַבְדְּךָ הָיָה יָרֵא אֶת־
יְהוָה וְהַנֹּשֶׁה בָּא לָקַחַת אֶת־
שְׁנֵי יְלָדַי לוֹ

When the
child had
grown, he
went out one
day to his
father among the
reapers.
וַיִּגְדַּל הַיָּלֶד וַיְהִי הַיּוֹם וַיֵּצֵא אֶל־
אָבִיו אֶל־
הַקֹּצְרִֽים׃

Run at
once to
meet her and
say to her, ‘Is all
well with you? Is all
well with your
husband? Is all
well with the
child?’” And she
answered, “All is
well.”

נָא לִקְרָאתָהּ וֶאֱמָר־לָהּ
הֲשָׁלוֹם לָךְ

Then he
went up and
lay on the
child,
putting his
mouth on his
mouth, his
eyes on his
eyes, and his
hands on his
hands. And as he
stretched himself
upon him, the
flesh of the
child became warm.
וַיַּעַל וַיִּשְׁכַּב עַל־
הַיֶּלֶד וַיָּשֶׂם פִּיו עַל־
פִּיו וְעֵינָיו עַל־
עֵינָיו וְכַפָּיו עַל־
כפו וַיִּגְהַר עָלָיו וַיָּחָם בְּשַׂר הַיָּֽלֶד׃

But he
abandoned the
counsel that the
old men gave him, and
took counsel with the
young men who had

וַֽיַּעֲזֹב אֶת־
עֲצַת הַזְּקֵנִים אֲשֶׁר יְעָצֻהוּ וַיִּוָּעַץ אֶת־
הַיְלָדִים אֲשֶׁר גָּדְלוּ אִתּוֹ הָעֹמְדִים לְפָנָֽיו׃

grown up with him
said to him, “
Thus shall you
speak to the
people who said to you, ‘Your
father made our
yoke heavy, but you
lighten it
for us’;
thus shall you
say to them, ‘My
little finger is
thicker than my
father’s thighs.
וַיְדַבְּרוּ אִתּוֹ הַיְלָדִים אֲשֶׁר גָּדְלוּ אִתּוֹ לֵאמֹר כֹּֽה־
תֹאמַר לָעָם אֲשֶׁר־
דִּבְּרוּ אֵלֶיךָ לֵאמֹר אָבִיךָ הִכְבִּיד אֶת־
עֻלֵּנוּ וְאַתָּה הָקֵל מֵעָלֵינוּ כֹּה תֹּאמַר אֲלֵהֶם קָֽטָנִּי עָבָה מִמָּתְנֵי אָבִֽי׃

King Rehoboam
spoke to them according to the
counsel of the
young men,
saying, “My
father made your
yoke heavy, but I will
add to it. My father
disciplined you with
whips, but I will discipline you with
scorpions.”
וַיְדַבֵּר אֲלֵהֶם כַּעֲצַת הַיְלָדִים לֵאמֹר אַכְבִּיד אֶֽת־
עֻלְּכֶם וַאֲנִי אֹסִיף עָלָיו אָבִי יִסַּר אֶתְכֶם בַּשּׁוֹטִים וַאֲנִי בָּעֲקְרַבִּֽים׃

While
Ezra prayed and
made confession,
weeping and casting himself
down before the
house of
God, a
very great assembly of
men,
women, and
children,
gathered to him
out of
Israel,
for the
people wept bitterly.
וּכְהִתְפַּלֵּל עֶזְרָא וּכְהִתְוַדֹּתוֹ בֹּכֶה וּמִתְנַפֵּל לִפְנֵי בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים נִקְבְּצוּ אֵלָיו מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל קָהָל רַב־
מְאֹד אֲנָשִׁים וְנָשִׁים וִֽילָדִים כִּֽי־
בָכוּ הָעָם הַרְבֵּה־
בֶֽכֶה׃ ס

And they
offered great sacrifices that
day and
rejoiced,
for God had made them
rejoice with
great joy; the
women and
children also rejoiced. And the
joy of
Jerusalem was
heard far away.
וַיִּזְבְּחוּ בַיּוֹם־
הַהוּא זְבָחִים גְּדוֹלִים וַיִּשְׂמָחוּ כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים שִׂמְּחָם שִׂמְחָה גְדוֹלָה וְגַם הַנָּשִׁים וְהַיְלָדִים שָׂמֵחוּ וַתִּשָּׁמַע שִׂמְחַת יְרוּשָׁלִַם מֵרָחֽוֹק׃

They send
out their
little boys like a
flock,
and their
children dance.
יְשַׁלְּחוּ כַצֹּאן עֲוִילֵיהֶם וְיַלְדֵיהֶם יְרַקֵּדֽוּן׃

Who provides for the
raven its
prey,
when its
young ones cry to
God for help,
and
wander about for
lack of
food?

מִי יָכִין לָעֹרֵב צֵידוֹ כִּֽי־
ילדו אֶל־
אֵל יְשַׁוֵּעוּ יִתְעוּ לִבְלִי־
אֹֽכֶל׃

when they
crouch,
bring forth their
offspring,
and are
delivered of their
young?
תִּכְרַעְנָה יַלְדֵיהֶן תְּפַלַּחְנָה חֶבְלֵיהֶם תְּשַׁלַּֽחְנָה׃

Better was a
poor and
wise youth than an
old and
foolish king who no longer knew how to
take advice.

טוֹב יֶלֶד מִסְכֵּן וְחָכָם מִמֶּלֶךְ זָקֵן וּכְסִיל אֲשֶׁר לֹא־
יָדַע לְהִזָּהֵר עֽוֹד׃

I
saw all the
living who move
about under the
sun, along with
that youth who was to
stand in the
king’s place.
רָאִיתִי אֶת־
כָּל־
הַחַיִּים הַֽמְהַלְּכִים תַּחַת הַשָּׁמֶשׁ עִם הַיֶּלֶד הַשֵּׁנִי אֲשֶׁר יַעֲמֹד תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

For you have
rejected your
people,
the
house of
Jacob,
because they are
full of things
from the
east and of
fortune-tellers like the
Philistines,
and they
strike hands with the
children of
foreigners.
