Hab 2:1

I will atake my stand at my watchpost
and station myself on the tower,
and blook out to see cwhat he will say to me,
and what I will answer concerning my complaint.

עַל־מִשְׁמַרְתִּי אֶעֱמֹדָה וְאֶֽתְיַצְּבָה עַל־מָצוֹר וַאֲצַפֶּה לִרְאוֹת מַה־יְדַבֶּר־בִּי וּמָה אָשִׁיב עַל־תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃

ἐπὶ τῆς φυλακῆς μου. στήσομαι καὶ ἐπιβήσομαι ἐπὶ πέτραν καὶ ἀποσκοπεύσω τοῦ ἰδεῖν τί λαλήσει ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ τί ἀποκριθῶ Ἐπὶ τὸν ἔλεγχόν μου

Hab 2:2

And the Lord answered me:

dWrite the vision;
make it plain on tablets,
so he may run who reads it.

וַיַּעֲנֵנִי יְהוָה וַיֹּאמֶר כְּתוֹב חָזוֹן וּבָאֵר עַל־הַלֻּחוֹת לְמַעַן יָרוּץ קוֹרֵא בֽוֹ׃

καὶ ἀπεκρίθη πρός με κύριος καὶ εἶπεν Γράψον ὅρασιν καὶ σαφῶς ἐπὶ πυξίον, ὅπως διώκῃ ἀναγινώσκων αὐτά.

Hab 2:3

For still ethe vision awaits its appointed time;
it hastens to the end—it will not lie.
If it seems slow, fwait for it;
git will surely come; it will not delay.

כִּי עוֹד חָזוֹן לַמּוֹעֵד וְיָפֵחַ לַקֵּץ וְלֹא יְכַזֵּב אִם־יִתְמַהְמָהּ חַכֵּה־לוֹ כִּֽי־בֹא יָבֹא לֹא יְאַחֵֽר׃
(LXX)
διότι ἔτι ὅρασις εἰς καιρὸν καὶ ἀνατελεῖ εἰς πέρας καὶ οὐκ εἰς κενόν· ἐὰν ὑστερήσῃ, ὑπόμεινον αὐτόν, ὅτι ἐρχόμενος ἥξει καὶ οὐ μὴ χρονίσῃ.

Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,
but hthe righteous shall live by his faith.

הִנֵּה עֻפְּלָה לֹא־יָשְׁרָה נַפְשׁוֹ בּוֹ וְצַדִּיק בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ יִחְיֶֽה׃

ἐὰν ὑποστείληται, οὐκ εὐδοκεῖ ψυχή μου ἐν αὐτῷ· δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεώς μου ζήσεται.

Moreover, wine

is ka traitor,
an arrogant man who is never at rest.
The meaning of the Hebrew of these two lines is uncertain

His greed is as wide as Sheol;
like death mhe has never enough.
nHe gathers for himself all nations
and collects as his own all peoples.”

וְאַף כִּֽי־הַיַּיִן בּוֹגֵד גֶּבֶר יָהִיר וְלֹא יִנְוֶה אֲשֶׁר הִרְחִיב כִּשְׁאוֹל נַפְשׁוֹ וְהוּא כַמָּוֶת וְלֹא יִשְׂבָּע וַיֶּאֱסֹף אֵלָיו כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם וַיִּקְבֹּץ אֵלָיו כָּל־הָעַמִּֽים׃

δὲ κατοινωμένος καὶ καταφρονητὴς ἀνὴρ ἀλάζων οὐδὲν μὴ περάνῃ, ὃς ἐπλάτυνεν καθὼς ᾅδης τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὗτος ὡς θάνατος οὐκ ἐμπιπλάμενος καὶ ἐπισυνάξει ἐπ' αὐτὸν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη καὶ εἰσδέξεται πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς λαούς.

Shall not all these otake up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

pWoe to him qwho heaps up what is not his own—
for rhow long?—
and sloads himself with pledges!”

הֲלוֹא־אֵלֶּה כֻלָּם עָלָיו מָשָׁל יִשָּׂאוּ וּמְלִיצָה חִידוֹת לוֹ וְיֹאמַר הוֹי הַמַּרְבֶּה לֹּא־לוֹ עַד־מָתַי וּמַכְבִּיד עָלָיו עַבְטִֽיט׃

οὐχὶ ταῦτα πάντα παραβολὴν κατ' αὐτοῦ λήμψονται καὶ πρόβλημα εἰς διήγησιν αὐτοῦ; καὶ ἐροῦσιν Οὐαὶ πληθύνων ἑαυτῷ τὰ οὐκ ὄντα αὐτοῦ ἕως τίνος; καὶ βαρύνων τὸν κλοιὸν αὐτοῦ στιβαρῶς.

tWill not your debtors suddenly arise,
and those awake who will make you tremble?
Then you will be spoil for them.

הֲלוֹא פֶתַע יָקוּמוּ נֹשְׁכֶיךָ וְיִקְצוּ מְזַעְזְעֶיךָ וְהָיִיתָ לִמְשִׁסּוֹת לָֽמוֹ׃

ὅτι ἐξαίφνης ἀναστήσονται δάκνοντες αὐτόν, καὶ ἐκνήψουσιν οἱ ἐπίβουλοί σου, καὶ ἔσῃ εἰς διαρπαγὴν αὐτοῖς.

uBecause you have plundered many nations,
all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you,
vfor the blood of man and wviolence to the earth,
to cities and all who dwell in them.

to be safe from the reach of harm!

You have devised shame for your house

you have forfeited your life.

and founds a city on iniquity!

Hab 2:13

Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts
that aepeoples labor merely for fire,
and nations weary themselves for nothing?

with the knowledge of agthe glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

you pour out your wrath and make them drunk,
in order to gaze ajat their nakedness!

הוֹי מַשְׁקֵה רֵעֵהוּ מְסַפֵּחַ חֲמָתְךָ וְאַף שַׁכֵּר לְמַעַן הַבִּיט עַל־מְעוֹרֵיהֶֽם׃

ποτίζων τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ ἀνατροπῇ θολερᾷ καὶ μεθύσκων, ὅπως ἐπιβλέπῃ ἐπὶ τὰ σπήλαια αὐτῶν.

Hab 2:16

You will have your fill akof shame instead of glory.
alDrink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision!
amThe cup in the Lord’s right hand
will come around to you,
and anutter shame will come upon your glory!

שָׂבַעְתָּ קָלוֹן מִכָּבוֹד שְׁתֵה גַם־אַתָּה וְהֵֽעָרֵל תִּסּוֹב עָלֶיךָ כּוֹס יְמִין יְהוָה וְקִיקָלוֹן עַל־כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ׃

πλησμονὴν ἀτιμίας ἐκ δόξης πίε καὶ σὺ καὶ διασαλεύθητι καὶ σείσθητι· ἐκύκλωσεν ἐπὶ σὲ ποτήριον δεξιᾶς κυρίου, καὶ συνήχθη ἀτιμία ἐπὶ τὴν δόξαν σου.

aoThe violence apdone to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them,

כִּי חֲמַס לְבָנוֹן יְכַסֶּךָּ וְשֹׁד בְּהֵמוֹת יְחִיתַן מִדְּמֵי אָדָם וַחֲמַס־אֶרֶץ קִרְיָה וְכָל־יֹשְׁבֵי בָֽהּ׃ס

arWhat profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, asa teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes atspeechless idols!

מָֽה־הוֹעִיל פֶּסֶל כִּי פְסָלוֹ יֹֽצְרוֹ מַסֵּכָה וּמוֹרֶה שָּׁקֶר כִּי בָטַח יֹצֵר יִצְרוֹ עָלָיו לַעֲשׂוֹת אֱלִילִים אִלְּמִֽים׃ס

Τί ὠφελεῖ γλυπτόν, ὅτι ἔγλυψαν αὐτό; ἔπλασαν αὐτὸ χώνευμα, φαντασίαν ψευδῆ, ὅτι πέποιθεν πλάσας ἐπὶ τὸ πλάσμα αὐτοῦ τοῦ ποιῆσαι εἴδωλα κωφά.

to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
