Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce

1 ^aSetting out from there, Jesus *went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds *gathered to Him again, and, ^bas He was accustomed, He once more began to teach them.

2 And some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began questioning Him whether it was lawful for a man to ^{▼▼Lit send away, the Heb term for divorce}divorce his wife. 3 And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “ ^dMoses permitted a man to write a ^{▼▼Permitting her to remarry}certificate of divorce and ^{▼▼Or divorce her}send his wife away.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “ ^{▼▼Or With reference to} ^hBecause of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But ⁱfrom the beginning of creation, God ^jcreated them male and female. 7 ^kFor this reason a man shall leave his father and mother ^{▼▼Many late mss add and shall cling to his wife}, 8 ^m and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples again began questioning Him about this. 11 And He *said to them, “ ⁿWhoever ^{▼▼Or sends away}divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and ^pif she herself ^{▼▼Or sends away}divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”
