‏ 1 Thessalonians 5

The Day of the Lord

1 Now as to the aperiods and
I.e., the end times
times, brothers and sisters, you chave no need of anything to be written to you.
2For you yourselves know full well that dthe day of the Lord is coming ejust like a thief in the night. 3While they are saying, “ fPeace and safety!” then gsudden destruction
Lit is coming
will come upon them like ilabor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in jdarkness, so that the day would overtake you
One early ms like thieves
llike a thief;
5for you are all msons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of ndarkness; 6so then, let’s not osleep as
Lit the rest (of mankind)
qothers do, but let’s be alert and
Or self-controlled
ssober.
7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, tget drunk at night. 8But since uwe are of the day, let’s vbe
Or self-controlled
sober, having put on the xbreastplate of yfaith and love, and as a zhelmet, the aahope of salvation.
9For God has not destined us for abwrath, but for acobtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 adwho died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11Therefore,
Or comfort
encourage one another and afbuild one another up, just as you also are doing.

Christian Conduct

12 But we ask you, brothers and sisters, to agrecognize those ahwho diligently labor among you and
Or care for you
ajare in leadership over you in the Lord, and give you
Or admonition
instruction,
13and that you regard them very highly in love because of their work. alLive in peace with one another. 14We urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish amthe
Or undisciplined
unruly, encourage aothe fainthearted, help apthe weak, be aqpatient with everyone.
15See that arno one repays another with evil for evil, but always asseek what is good for one another and for all people. 16 atRejoice always, 17 aupray without ceasing, 18in everything avgive thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 19 awDo not quench the Spirit, 20do not utterly reject
Or prophetic gifts
ayprophecies,
21but azexamine everything; bahold firmly to that which is good, 22abstain from every
Or appearance
form of evil.

23 Now bcmay the God of peace bdHimself sanctify you entirely; and may your bespirit and soul and body be kept complete, bfwithout blame at bgthe coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 bhFaithful is He who bicalls you, and He also will do it.

25 Brothers and sisters, bjpray for us
Two early mss add also
