Correcting False Teaching

1 Paul, aan apostle of bChrist Jesus caccording to the commandment of dGod our Savior, and of eChrist Jesus, who is our fhope,

2 To gTimothy, hmy true

son in the faith: jGrace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and kChrist Jesus our Lord.

3 Just as I urged you
Lit while going to
upon my departure for mMacedonia, to remain on at nEphesus so that you would instruct certain people not to oteach strange doctrines,
4nor to

pay attention to qmyths and endless rgenealogies, which give rise to useless sspeculation rather than tadvance
I.e., prob. the plan of salvation
the plan of God, which is by faith, so I urge you now.
5But the goal of our

winstruction is love xfrom a pure heart, from a ygood conscience, and from a sincere zfaith.
6Some people have strayed from these things and have turned aside to aafruitless discussion, 7 abwanting to be acteachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

8 But we know that adthe Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9realizing the fact that aelaw is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and afrebellious, for the agungodly and sinners, for the unholy and ahworldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for the

11according to aqthe glorious gospel of arthe blessed God, with which I have been asentrusted.

Paul’s Testimony

12 I thank atChrist Jesus our Lord, who has austrengthened me, because He considered me faithful, avputting me into service, 13even though I was previously a blasphemer and a awpersecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was axshown mercy because ayI acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14and the azgrace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the bafaith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. 15 bbIt is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that bcChrist Jesus came into the world to bdsave sinners, among whom beI am foremost. 16Yet for this reason I bffound mercy, so that in me as the foremost sinner Jesus Christ might bgdemonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those
Or destined to
who would believe in Him for eternal life.
17Now to the biKing

18 This bpcommand I entrust to you, Timothy, bqmy

19keeping bufaith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to
