1 John 3

Children of God Love One Another

Lit what kind of love
b  how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called c  children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because d  it did not know Him.
2 e  Beloved, now we are f  children of God, and g  it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He h  appears, we will be i  like Him, because we will j  see Him just as He is. 3And everyone who has this k  hope fixed on Him l  purifies himself, just as He is pure.

4Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and m  sin is lawlessness. 5You know that He n  appeared in order to o  take away sins; and p  in Him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in Him q  sins; no one who sins has seen Him or
Or has known
s  knows Him.
7 t  Little children, make sure no one u  deceives you; v  the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; 8the one who practices sin is w  of the devil; for the devil
Lit sins
has sinned from the beginning. y  The Son of God z  appeared for this purpose, aa  to destroy the works of the devil.
9No one who is
Or begotten
ac  born of God ad  practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is
Or begotten
born of God.
10By this the af  children of God and the ag  children of the devil are obvious:
Lit everyone
anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who ai  does not love his aj  brother.

11 ak  For this is the message al  which you have heard from the beginning am  that we should love one another; 12not as an  Cain, who was of ao  the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because ap  his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.

13Do not be surprised, brethren, if aq  the world hates you. 14We know that we have ar  passed out of death into life as  because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. 15Everyone who at  hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that au  no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16We know love by this, that av  He laid down His life for us; and aw  we ought to lay down our lives for the ax  brethren. 17But ay  whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and az  closes his
Lit inward parts
Lit from
against him, bc  how does the love of God abide in him?
18 bd  Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and be  truth. 19We will know by this that we are bf  of the truth, and will
Lit persuade
assure our heart before Him
Or that if our heart condemns us, that God...
in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
21 bi  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have bj  confidence
Lit toward
before God;
22and bl  whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we bm  keep His commandments and do bn  the things that are pleasing in His sight.

23This is His commandment, that we
Or believe the name
bp  believe in bq  the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as br  He
Lit gave us a commandment
commanded us.
24The one who bt  keeps His commandments bu  abides in Him, and He in him. bv  We know by this that bw  He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
