1 John 5
Overcoming the World1 a Whoever believes that Jesus is the ▼
▼ I.e. MessiahChrist is ▼ , d born of God, and whoever loves the ▼
▼ Lit one who begetsFather f loves the child ▼ born of Him. 2 h By this we know that i we love the children of God, when we love God and ▼
▼ Lit doobserve His commandments. 3 For k this is the love of God, that we l keep His commandments; and m His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is ▼ , o born of God p overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who q believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the One who came r by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not ▼ with the water only, but ▼ with the water and ▼ with the blood. It is v the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are w three that testify: 8 ▼
▼ A few late mss add ...in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. And there are three that testify on earth, the Spiritthe Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are ▼
▼ Lit for the one thingin agreement. 9 z If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that aa He has testified concerning His Son. 10 The one who believes in the Son of God ab has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has ac made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us ad eternal life, and ae this life is in His Son. 12 af He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
This Is Written That You May Know13 ag These things I have written to you who ah believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have ai eternal life. 14 This is aj the confidence which we have ▼
▼ Lit towardbefore Him, that, al if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask am we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. 16 If anyone sees his brother ▼
▼ Lit sinningcommitting a sin not leading to death ao he shall ask and ▼
▼ Or God will give him life, that is, to those who...God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. aq There is a sin leading to death; ar I do not say that he should make request for this. 17 as All unrighteousness is sin, and at there is a sin not leading to death. 18 au We know that av no one who is ▼ born of God sins; but He who was ▼ born of God ay keeps him, and az the evil one does not ba touch him. 19 bb We know that bc we are of God, and that bd the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And be we know that bf the Son of God has come, and has bg given us understanding so that we may know bh Him who is true; and we bi are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. bj This is the true God and bk eternal life. 21 bl Little children, guard yourselves from bm idols.
