1 Thessalonians 5
The Day of the Lord1 Now as to the a times and the epochs, brethren, you b have no need of anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know full well that c the day of the Lord ▼
▼ Lit is comingwill come e just like a thief in the night. 3 While they are saying f “Peace and safety!” then ▼
▼ Or sudden destruction, h destruction ▼
▼ Lit comes uponwill come upon them suddenly like j labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in k darkness, that the day would overtake you ▼
▼ One early ms reads like thieves, m like a thief; 5 for you are all n sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of o darkness; 6 so then let us not p sleep as ▼
▼ Lit the remaining ones, r others do, but let us be alert and ▼
▼ Or self-controlled, t sober. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get u drunk at night. 8 But since v we are of the day, let us w be ▼
▼ Or self-controlledsober, having put on the y breastplate of z faith and love, and as a aa helmet, the ab hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for ac wrath, but for ad obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 ae who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11 Therefore ▼
▼ Or comfortencourage one another and ag build up one another, just as you also are doing.
Christian Conduct12 But we request of you, brethren, that you ▼
▼ Lit know, ai appreciate those aj who diligently labor among you, and ak have charge over you in the Lord and give you ▼
▼ Or admonitioninstruction, 13 and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. am Live in peace with one another. 14 We urge you, brethren, admonish an the ▼
▼ Or undisciplinedunruly, encourage ap the fainthearted, help aq the weak, be ar patient with everyone. 15 See that as no one repays another with evil for evil, but always at seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 au Rejoice always; 17 av pray without ceasing; 18 in everything aw give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 ax Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise ay prophetic ▼
▼ Or giftsutterances. 21 But ba examine everything carefully; bb hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every ▼
▼ Or appearanceform of evil. 23 Now bd may the God of peace be Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your bf spirit and soul and body be preserved complete bg without blame at bh the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 bi Faithful is He who bj calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 25 Brethren bk pray for us ▼
▼ Two early mss add also. 26 bm Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27 I adjure you by the Lord to bn have this letter read to all the bo brethren. 28 bp The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
