Acts 2

The Day of Pentecost

1When a  the day of Pentecost
Lit was being fulfilled
had come, they were all together in one place.
2And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled c  the whole house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared to them tongues as of fire
Or being distributed
distributing themselves, and
Lit it
Or sat
rested on each one of them.
4And they were all g  filled with the Holy Spirit and began to h  speak with other
Or languages
tongues, as the Spirit was giving them
Or ability to speak out

5Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem k  devout men from every nation under heaven. 6And when l  this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own
Or dialect
7 n  They were amazed and astonished, saying
Lit Behold
Why, are not all these who are speaking p  Galileans?
8And how is it that we each hear them in our own
Or dialect
Lit in
to which we were born?
9Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and s  Cappadocia, t  Pontus and
I.e. west coast province of Asia Minor
v  Asia,
10 w  Phrygia and x  Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around y  Cyrene, and
Lit the sojourning Romans
aa  visitors from Rome, both Jews and
I.e. Gentile converts to Judaism
ac  proselytes,
11Cretans and Arabswe hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” 12And ad  they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others were mocking and saying ae  They are full of
I.e. new wine
sweet wine.”

Peter’s Sermon

14But Peter
Or being put forward as spokesman
taking his stand with ah  the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
15For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, ai  for it is only the
I.e. 9 a.m.
third hour of the day;
16but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 17ak  And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all
Lit flesh
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
And your young men shall see visions,
And your old men shall dream dreams;
18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women,
I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit
And they shall prophesy.
19And I will grant wonders in the sky above
And signs on the earth below,
Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.
20The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood,
Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.
21And it shall be that am  everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

22Men of Israel, listen to these words: an  Jesus the Nazarene, ao  a man
Or exhibited or accredited
attested to you by God with
Or works of power
miracles and ar  wonders and
Or attesting miracles
signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know
23this Man, delivered over by the at  predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God au  you nailed to a cross by the hands of
Lit men without the Law; i.e. pagan
godless men and put Him to death.
Lit Whom God raised up
“But ax  God raised Him up again, putting an end to the
Lit birth pains
agony of death, since it az  was impossible for Him to be held
Lit by it
in its power.
25For David says of Him, bb  I saw the Lord always in my presence;
For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.
26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted;
Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;
27 Because You will not abandon my soul to bc  Hades,
bd  Nor
Lit give
allow Your
Or devout or pious
Holy One to
Lit see corruption
undergo decay.
28You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’

Lit Men brothers
Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the bi  patriarch David that he both bj  died and bk  was buried, and bl  his tomb is
Lit among
with us to this day.
30And so, because he was bn  a prophet and knew that bo  God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one
Lit of the fruit of his loins
of his descendants on his throne,
31he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of
I.e. the Messiah
the Christ, that br  He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh
Lit see corruption
suffer decay.
32This Jesus bt  God raised up again, to which we are all bu  witnesses. 33Therefore having been exalted
Or by
bw  to the right hand of God, and bx  having received from the Father by  the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has bz  poured forth this which you both see and hear.
34For it was not David who ascended into
Lit the heavens
heaven, but he himself says: cb  The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

36Therefore let all the cc  house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both cd  Lord and
I.e. Messiah
Christthis Jesus cf  whom you crucified.”

The Ingathering

37Now when they heard this, they were
Or wounded in conscience
pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles
Lit Men brothers
Or what are we to do
cj  what shall we do?”
38Peter said to them, ck  Repent, and each of you be cl  baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39“For cm  the promise is for you and your children and for all who are cn  far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40And with many other words he solemnly co  testified and kept on exhorting them, saying
Or Escape
Be saved from this cq  perverse generation!”
41So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand
I.e. persons
cs  souls.
42They were ct  continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to cu  the breaking of bread and

Lit fear was occurring to every soul
Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many cy  wonders and
Or attesting miracles
signs were taking place through the apostles.
44And all those who had believed

were together and db  had all things in common;
45and they dc  began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 dd  Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and de  breaking bread
Or in the various private homes
from house to house, they were taking their

meals together with gladness and
Or simplicity
sincerity of heart,
47praising God and di  having favor with all the people. And the Lord dj  was adding
Lit together
to their number day by day dl  those who were being saved.
