Amos 1

Judgment on Neighbor Nations

1The words of Amos, who was among the a  sheepherders from b  Tekoa, which he
Lit saw concerning
envisioned in visions concerning Israel in the days of d  Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of e  Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the f  earthquake.
2He said,
“The g   Lord roars from Zion
And from Jerusalem He utters His voice;
And the shepherds’ h  pasture grounds mourn,
And the
Lit head
,
j  summit of Carmel dries up.”

3Thus says the  Lord,
“For k  three transgressions of l  Damascus and for four
I will not
Lit cause it to turn back, and so throughout the ch
revoke its punishment,
Because they threshed Gilead with implements of sharp iron.
4So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael
And it will consume the citadels of n  Ben-hadad.
5“I will also o  break the gate bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the
Possibly, Baalbek
valley of Aven,
And him who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden;
So the people of Aram will go exiled to q  Kir,”
Says the  Lord.

6Thus says the  Lord,
For three transgressions of r  Gaza and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they deported an entire population
To s  deliver it up to Edom.
7So I will send fire upon the wall of Gaza
And it will consume her citadels.
8I will also cut off the inhabitant from t  Ashdod,
And him who holds the scepter, from u  Ashkelon;
I will even
Lit cause to return
unleash My
Lit hand
power upon Ekron,
And the remnant of the x  Philistines will perish,”
Says the Lord
Heb YHWH, usually rendered  Lord
 God.

9Thus says the  Lord,
For three transgressions of z  Tyre and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they delivered up an entire population to Edom
And did not remember the covenant of
Lit brothers
,
ab  brotherhood.
10“So I will ac  send fire upon the wall of Tyre
And it will consume her citadels.”

11Thus says the  Lord,
For three transgressions of ad  Edom and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because he ae  pursued his brother with the sword,
While he
Lit corrupted
stifled his compassion;
His anger also ag  tore continually,
And he maintained his fury forever.
12So I will send fire upon ah  Teman
And it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

13Thus says the  Lord,
For three transgressions of the sons of ai  Ammon and for four
I will not revoke its punishment,
Because they aj  ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
In order to ak  enlarge their borders.
14So I will kindle a fire on the wall of al  Rabbah
And it will consume her citadels
Amid
Or shouts
,
an  war cries on the day of battle,
And a ao  storm on the day of tempest.
15“Their ap  king will go into exile,
He and his princes together,” says the  Lord.
