Haggai 2

The Builders Encouraged

1On the twenty-first of the seventh month, the word of the  Lord came by a  Haggai the prophet saying, 2Speak now to b  Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, c  governor of Judah, and to d  Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the e  remnant of the people saying, 3Who is f  left among you who saw this
Lit house
temple in its h  former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not
Lit in your eyes
seem to you like nothing
Lit like it
in comparison?
4But now
Lit be strong
l  take courage, Zerubbabel,’ declares the  Lord, ‘take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,’ declares the  Lord, ‘and work; for m  I am with you,’ declares the  Lord of hosts.
5‘As for the
Lit word
o  promise which I
Lit cut with
made you when you came out of Egypt,
Or while...was standing
My r  Spirit is abiding in your midst; s  do not fear!’
6For thus says the  Lord of hosts, ‘ t  Once more
Lit it is a little
in a v  little while, I am going to w  shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.
7I will shake x  all the nations; and
Or the desire of all nations will come
they will come with the z  wealth of all nations, and I will aa  fill this house with glory,’ says the  Lord of hosts.
8‘The ab  silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,’ declares the  Lord of hosts. 9The latter ac  glory of this house will be greater than the ad  former,’ says the  Lord of hosts, ‘and in this place I will give ae  peace,’ declares the  Lord of hosts.”

10On the af  twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the  Lord came to Haggai the prophet, saying, 11Thus says the  Lord of hosts, ‘ ag  Ask now the priests for a
Lit law
12If a man carries ai  holy meat in the
Lit wing
fold of his garment, and touches bread with
Lit his wing
this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?’” And the priests answered, “No.”
13Then Haggai said al  If one who is unclean from a
Lit soul
corpse touches any of these, will the latter become unclean?” And the priests answered, “It will become unclean.”
14Then Haggai said, “‘ an  So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the  Lord, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean. 15But now, do
Lit set your heart
ap  consider from this day
Or backward
onward: before one ar  stone was placed on another in the temple of the  Lord,
Lit since they were
from that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty
Or troughs full
measures, there would be only twenty.
17I smote you and every work of your hands with au  blasting wind, mildew and hail;
Or but what did we have in common?
yet you did not come back to Me,’ declares the  Lord.
Lit set your heart
ax  consider from this day
Or backward
onward, from the az  twenty-fourth day of the ninth month; from the day when the temple of the  Lord was ba  founded,
Lit set your heart
19Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from this day on I will bc  bless you.’”

20Then the word of the  Lord came a second time to Haggai on the bd  twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, 21Speak to be  Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying, ‘I am going to bf  shake the heavens and the earth. 22‘I will bg  overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the bh  power of the kingdoms of the
Or Gentiles
nations; and I will bj  overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the bk  horses and their riders will go down, bl  everyone by the sword of another.’
23On that day,’ declares the  Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the  Lord, ‘and I will make you like a
Or seal
bn  signet ring, for bo  I have chosen you,’” declares the  Lord of hosts.
