Ephraim’s Idolatry1 a When Ephraim ▼
▼ Or spoke with tremblingspoke, there was trembling.
He c exalted himself in Israel,
But through d Baal he ▼
▼ Or became guiltydid wrong and died.
2And now they sin more and more,
And make for themselves f molten images,
▼ Or according to their own understanding, h skillfully made from their silver,
All of them the i work of craftsmen.
They say of them, “Let the ▼
▼ Lit sacrificers of or, (among) mankindmen who sacrifice kiss the k calves!”
3Therefore they will be like the l morning cloud
And like dew which ▼
▼ Lit goes away earlysoon disappears,
Like n chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor
And like o smoke from a ▼
▼ Lit windowchimney.
4Yet I have been the q Lord your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know r any god except Me,
For there is no savior s besides Me.
▼ Or knew, u cared for you in the wilderness,
v In the land of drought.
6As they had their pasture, they became w satisfied,
And being satisfied, their x heart became proud;
Therefore they y forgot Me.
7So I will be z like a lion to them;
Like a aa leopard I will ▼
▼ Or watchlie in wait by the wayside.
8I will encounter them ac like a bear robbed of her cubs,
And I will tear open ▼
▼ Lit the enclosure of their hearttheir chests;
There I will also ae devour them like a lioness,
As a wild beast would tear them.
9 It is your destruction, O Israel,
▼ Or But in Me is your helpThat you are ag against Me, against your ah help.
10Where now is your ai king
That he may save you in all your cities,
And your aj judges of whom you ▼
▼ Lit saidrequested,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11I al gave you a king in My anger
And am took him away in My wrath.
12The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
His sin is an stored up.
13The pains of ao childbirth come upon him;
He is ap not a wise son,
▼ Lit it is the time that he should not tarry at the breaking forth of childrenit is not the time that he should ar delay at the opening of the womb.
14Shall I as ransom them from the ▼
▼ Lit handpower of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
au O Death, where are your thorns?
O Sheol, where is your sting?
av Compassion will be hidden from My sight.
15Though he aw flourishes among the ▼
▼ Or brothersreeds,
An ay east wind will come,
The wind of the Lord coming up from the wilderness;
And his fountain will az become dry
And his spring will be dried up;
It will ba plunder his treasury of every precious article.
▼ Ch 14:1 in HebSamaria will be held bc guilty,
For she has bd rebelled against her God.
be They will fall by the bf sword,
Their little ones will be bg dashed in pieces,
And their pregnant bh women will be ripped open.
