Israel Reaps the Whirlwind1 a Put the trumpet to your ▼
▼ Lit palatelips!
c Like an eagle the enemy comes d against the house of the Lord,
Because they have e transgressed My covenant
And rebelled against My f law.
2 g They cry out to Me,
“My God h we of Israel know You!”
3Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
4 i They have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.
With their j silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
▼ Lit hethey might be cut off.
▼ Or Your calf has rejected youHe has rejected your m calf, O Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of n innocence?
6For from Israel is even this!
A o craftsman made it, so it is not God;
Surely the calf of Samaria will be broken to ▼
▼ Or splinterspieces.
7For q they sow the wind
And they reap the r whirlwind.
The standing grain has no ▼
▼ Lit growthheads;
It yields t no ▼
▼ Or mealgrain.
Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.
8Israel is v swallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a w vessel in which no one delights.
9For they have gone up to x Assyria,
Like y a wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has z hired ▼
▼ Lit loveslovers.
10Even though they hire allies among the nations,
Now I will ab gather them up;
And they will begin ac to ▼
▼ Or suffer for awhilediminish
Because of the burden of the ae king of princes.
11Since Ephraim has af multiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12Though ag I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My ah law,
They are regarded as a strange thing.
13As for My ai sacrificial gifts,
They aj sacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But the Lord has taken no delight in them.
Now He will ak remember their iniquity,
And al punish them for their sins;
They will return to am Egypt.
14For Israel has an forgotten his Maker and ao built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a ap fire on its cities that it may consume its palatial dwellings.
