John 1

The Deity of Jesus Christ

1 a  In the beginning was b  the Word, and the Word was c  with God, and d  the Word was God. 2
Lit This one
He was in the beginning with God.
3 f  All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 g  In Him was life, and the life was h  the Light of men. 5 i  The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not
Or overpower
comprehend it.

The Witness John

Or came into being
came a man sent from God, whose name was l  John.
Lit This one
He came
Lit for testimony
o  as a witness, to testify about the Light p  so that all might believe through him.
Lit That one
r  He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9There was s  the true Light
Or which enlightens every person coming into the world
which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
10He was in the world, and u  the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11He came to His
Or own things, possessions, domain
own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
12But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become w  children of God, even x  to those who believe in His name, 13 y  who were
Or begotten
born, not of
Lit bloods
blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14And ab  the Word ac  became flesh, and
Or tabernacled; i.e. lived temporarily
ae  dwelt among us, and af  we saw His glory, glory as of
Or unique, only one of His kind
the only begotten from the Father, full of ah  grace and ai  truth.
15John aj  testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘ ak  He who comes after me
Lit has become before me
has a higher rank than I, am  for He existed before me.’”
16For of His an  fullness
Lit we all received
we have all received, and
Lit grace for grace
grace upon grace.
17For aq  the Law was given through Moses; ar  grace and as  truth
Lit came to be
were realized through Jesus Christ.
18 au  No one has seen God at any time; av  the only begotten God who is aw  in the bosom of the Father ax  He has explained Him.

The Testimony of John

19This is ay  the testimony of John, when az  the Jews sent to him priests and Levites ba  from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed bb  I am not
I.e. the Messiah
the Christ.”
21They asked him, “What then? Are you bd  Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you be  the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am bf  a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the
I.e. Messiah
Christ, nor Elijah, nor bh  the Prophet?”
26John answered them saying bi  I baptize

27It is bk  He who comes after me, the bl  thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28These things took place in Bethany bm  beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold bn  the Lamb of God who bo  takes away the sin of the world! 30This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘ bp  After me comes a Man who
Lit has become before me
has a higher rank than I, br  for He existed before me.’
31I did not recognize
I.e. as the Messiah
Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing

32John bu  testified saying bv  I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33I did not recognize
I.e. as the Messiah
Him, but He who sent me to baptize
The Gr here can be translated in, with or by

34I myself have seen, and have testified that this is ca  the Son of God.”

Jesus’ Public Ministry, First Converts

35Again cb  the next day John was standing
Lit and
with two of his disciples,
36and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold cd  the Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, What do you seek?” They said to Him, ce  Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39He said to them, Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the

tenth hour.
40 cg  One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the ch  Messiah” (which translated means

42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon the son of

ck  John; you shall be called cl  Cephas

43 co  The next day He purposed to go into cp  Galilee, and He found cq  Philip. And Jesus said to him, cr  Follow Me.” 44Now cs  Philip was from ct  Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 cu  Philip found cv  Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom cw  Moses in the Law and also cx  the Prophets wroteJesus of cy  Nazareth cz  the son of Joseph.” 46Nathanael said to him, da  Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” db  Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, Behold, an dc  Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, Before dd  Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49Nathanael answered Him, de  Rabbi, You are df  the Son of God; You are the dg  King of Israel.” 50Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51And He said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see dh  the heavens opened and di  the angels of God ascending and descending on dj  the Son of Man.”
