John 14

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

1 a  Do not let your heart be troubled;
Or you believe in God
believe in God, believe also in Me.
2In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for c  I go to prepare a place for you. 3If I go and prepare a place for you, d  I will come again and receive you to Myself, that e  where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way where I am going.” 5 f  Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, I am g  the way, and h  the truth, and i  the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Oneness with the Father

7 j  If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you k  know Him, and have l  seen Him.”

8 m  Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9Jesus said to him, Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? n  He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that o  I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? p  The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11Believe Me that q  I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise r  believe because of the works themselves. 12Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and s  greater works than these he will do; because t  I go to the Father. 13 u  Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that v  the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask Me anything w  in My name, I will do it.

15 x  If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Role of the Spirit

16I will ask the Father, and He will give you another
Gr Paracletos, one called alongside to help; or Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor
z  Helper, that He may be with you forever;
17that is aa  the Spirit of truth ab  whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

18I will not leave you as orphans; ac  I will come to you. 19
Lit Yet a little and the world
ae  After a little while af  the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; ag  because I live, you will live also.
20 ah  In that day you will know that ai  I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 aj  He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and ak  he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will al  disclose Myself to him.” 22 am  Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened an  that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23Jesus answered and said to him, ao  If anyone loves Me, he will ap  keep My word; and aq  My Father will love him, and We ar  will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24He who does not love Me as  does not keep My words; and at  the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

25These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26“But the au  Helper, the Holy Spirit, av  whom the Father will send in My name, aw  He will teach you all things, and ax  bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27 ay  Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. az  Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28 ba  You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and bb  I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because bc  I go to the Father, for bd  the Father is greater than I. 29Now be  I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30I will not speak much more with you, for bf  the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; 31but so that the world may know that I love the Father
Lit and as the I do
I do exactly as bh  the Father commanded Me. Get up, bi  let us go from here.
