Nahum 1

God Is Awesome

Or burden
b oracle of c Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
A d jealous and avenging God is the  Lord;
The  Lord is e avenging and
Lit a possessor of wrath
The  Lord takes g vengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
The  Lord is h slow to anger and great in power,
And the  Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In i whirlwind and storm is His way,
And j clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
He k rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
He dries up all the rivers.
l Bashan and Carmel wither;
The blossoms of Lebanon wither.
Mountains m quake because of Him
And the hills n dissolve;
Indeed the earth is o upheaved by His presence,
The p world and all the inhabitants in it.
q Who can stand before His indignation?
Who can endure the r burning of His anger?
His s wrath is poured out like fire
And the t rocks are broken up by Him.
The  Lord is u good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And v He knows those who take refuge in Him.
But with an w overflowing flood
He will make a complete end of
I.e. Nineveh’s
its site,
And will pursue His enemies into y darkness.

Whatever you z devise against the  Lord,
He will make a aa complete end of it.
Distress will not rise up twice.
10 Like tangled ab thorns,
And like those who are ac drunken with their drink,
They are ad consumed
As stubble completely withered.
11 From you has gone forth
One who ae plotted evil against the  Lord,
Or worthless; Heb Belial
ag wicked counselor.

12 Thus says the  Lord, Though they are at full strength and likewise many,
Even so, they will be ah cut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you ai no longer.
13 So now, I will aj break his yoke bar from upon you,
And I will tear off your shackles.”

14 The  Lord has issued a command concerning
I.e. the king of Nineveh
Lit No more of your name will be sown
Your name will am no longer be perpetuated.
I will cut off
Or a graven image
ao idol and
Lit cast metal image
From the house of your gods.
I will prepare your aq grave,
For you are contemptible.”

Ch 2:1 in Heb
Behold as on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace!
at Celebrate your feasts, O Judah;
Pay your vows.
For au never again will the
Or worthless one; Heb Belial
wicked one pass through you;
He is aw cut off completely.
