Psalms 109

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

1 O a  God of my praise,
b  Do not be silent!
2For they have opened the
Lit wicked mouth and the deceitful
wicked and d  deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken
Lit with
against me with a f  lying tongue.
3They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me g  without cause.
4In return h  for my love they act as my accusers;
But i  I am in prayer.
5Thus they have
Lit laid upon me
k  repaid me evil for good
And l  hatred for my love.

6Appoint a wicked man over him,
And let an
Or adversary, Satan
n  accuser stand at his right hand.
7When he is judged, let him o  come forth guilty,
And let his p  prayer become sin.
8Let q  his days be few;
Let r  another take his office.
9Let his s  children be fatherless
And his t  wife a widow.
10Let his u  children wander about and beg;
And let them v  seek sustenance
Or out of their desolate places
far from their ruined homes.
11Let x  the creditor
Lit ensnare, strike at
seize all that he has,
And let z  strangers plunder the product of his labor.
12Let there be none to
Lit continue
ab  extend lovingkindness to him,
Nor ac  any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13Let his ad  posterity be
Lit for cutting off
cut off;
In a following generation let their af  name be blotted out.

14Let ag  the iniquity of his fathers be remembered
Lit to
before the  Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be ai  blotted out.
15Let aj  them be before the  Lord continually,
That He may ak  cut off their memory from the earth;
16Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness,
But persecuted the al  afflicted and needy man,
And the am  despondent in heart, to an  put them to death.
17He also loved cursing, so ao  it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18But he ap  clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it aq  entered into
Lit his inward parts
his body like water
And like oil into his bones.
19Let it be to him as as  a garment with which he covers himself,
And for a belt with which he constantly at  girds himself.
Lit This is
Let this be the av  reward of my accusers from the  Lord,
And of those who aw  speak evil against my soul.

21But You, O
Heb YHWH, usually rendered  Lord
 God, the Lord, deal kindly with me ay  for Your name’s sake;
Because az  Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;
22For ba  I am afflicted and needy,
Lit one has pierced my heart within me
my heart is bc  wounded within me.
23I am passing bd  like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off be  like the locust.
24My bf  knees
Or totter
are weak from bh  fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25I also have become a bi  reproach to them;
When they see me, they bj  wag their head.

26 bk  Help me, O  Lord my God;
Save me according to Your lovingkindness.
Or That they may know
And let them bm  know that this is Your hand;
You,  Lord, have done it.
28 bn  Let them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they shall be ashamed,
But Your bo  servant shall be glad.
Or My accusers will be
Let bq  my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
Or they will cover
let them bs  cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the  Lord;
And in the midst of many bt  I will praise Him.
31For He stands bu  at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who bv  judge his soul.
