Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.1 O a God of my praise,
b Do not be silent!
2 For they have opened the ▼
▼ Lit wicked mouth and the deceitfulwicked and d deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken ▼
▼ Lit withagainst me with a f lying tongue.
3 They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me g without cause.
4 In return h for my love they act as my accusers;
But i I am in prayer.
5 Thus they have ▼
▼ Lit laid upon me, k repaid me evil for good
And l hatred for my love.
6 Appoint a wicked man over him,
And let an ▼
▼ Or adversary, Satan, n accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is judged, let him o come forth guilty,
And let his p prayer become sin.
8 Let q his days be few;
Let r another take his office.
9 Let his s children be fatherless
And his t wife a widow.
10 Let his u children wander about and beg;
And let them v seek sustenance ▼
▼ Or out of their desolate placesfar from their ruined homes.
11 Let x the creditor ▼
▼ Lit ensnare, strike atseize all that he has,
And let z strangers plunder the product of his labor.
12 Let there be none to ▼
▼ Lit continue, ab extend lovingkindness to him,
Nor ac any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13 Let his ad posterity be ▼
▼ Lit for cutting offcut off;
In a following generation let their af name be blotted out.
14 Let ag the iniquity of his fathers be remembered ▼
▼ Lit tobefore the Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be ai blotted out.
15 Let aj them be before the Lord continually,
That He may ak cut off their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness,
But persecuted the al afflicted and needy man,
And the am despondent in heart, to an put them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so ao it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he ap clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it aq entered into ▼

And like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be to him as as a garment with which he covers himself,
And for a belt with which he constantly at girds himself.

And of those who aw speak evil against my soul.
21 But You, O ▼
▼ Heb YHWH, usually rendered LordGod, the Lord, deal kindly with me ay for Your name’s sake;
Because az Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;
22 For ba I am afflicted and needy,
▼ Lit one has pierced my heart within memy heart is bc wounded within me.
23 I am passing bd like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off be like the locust.
24 My bf knees ▼
▼ Or totterare weak from bh fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 I also have become a bi reproach to them;
When they see me, they bj wag their head.
26 bk Help me, O Lord my God;
Save me according to Your lovingkindness.
▼ Or That they may knowAnd let them bm know that this is Your hand;
You, Lord, have done it.
28 bn Let them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they shall be ashamed,
But Your bo servant shall be glad.
▼ Or My accusers will beLet bq my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
▼ Or they will coverlet them bs cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.
30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord;
And in the midst of many bt I will praise Him.
31 For He stands bu at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who bv judge his soul.
