Psalms 140

Prayer for Protection against the Wicked.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

1 a  Rescue me, O  Lord, from evil men;
Preserve me from b  violent men
2Who c  devise evil things in their hearts;
They d  continually stir up wars.
3They e  sharpen their tongues as a serpent;
f  Poison of a viper is under their lips.
Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interlude
Selah.

4 h  Keep me, O  Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
i  Preserve me from violent men
Who have
Or devised
purposed to
Lit push violently
,
l  trip up my feet.
5The proud have m  hidden a trap for me, and cords;
They have spread a n  net by the
Lit track
wayside;
They have set p  snares for me. Selah.

6I q  said to the  Lord, “You are my God;
r  Give ear, O  Lord, to the s  voice of my supplications.
7“O
Heb YHWH, usually rendered  Lord
 God the Lord u  the strength of my salvation,
You have v  covered my head in the day of
Lit weapons
battle.
8Do not grant, O  Lord, the x  desires of the wicked;
Do not promote y  his evil device, that they not be exalted. Selah.

9As for the head of those who surround me,
May the z  mischief of their lips cover them.
10“May aa  burning coals fall upon them;
May they be ab  cast into the fire,
Into
Lit watery
deep pits from which they ad  cannot rise.
11“May a
Lit man of tongue
slanderer not be established in the earth;
af  May evil hunt the violent man
Lit thrust upon thrust
speedily.”

12I know that the  Lord will ah  maintain the cause of the afflicted
And ai  justice for the poor.
13Surely the aj  righteous will give thanks to Your name;
The ak  upright will dwell in Your presence.
