The Lord Praised for Giving Deliverance.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord,
2 Sam 22:1-51who spoke to the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said,1 “I love You, O Lord, b my strength.”
2 The Lord is c my ▼
▼ Or cragrock and e my fortress and my f deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My g shield and the h horn of my salvation, my i stronghold.
3 I call upon the Lord, who is j worthy to be praised,
And I am k saved from my enemies.
4 The l cords of death encompassed me,
And the m torrents of ▼
▼ Or destruction; Heb Belialungodliness ▼
▼ Or were assailing or terrifyingterrified me.
5 The p cords of ▼
▼ I.e. the nether worldSheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
6 In my r distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice s out of His temple,
And my t cry for help before Him came into His ears.
7 Then the u earth shook and quaked;
And the v foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
8 Smoke went up ▼
▼ Or in His wrathout of His nostrils,
And x fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it.
9 He y bowed the heavens also, and came down
With thick z darkness under His feet.
10 He rode upon a aa cherub and flew;
And He sped upon the ab wings of the wind.
11 He made ac darkness His hiding place ad His ▼
▼ Or pavilioncanopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the af brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and ag coals of fire.
13 The Lord also ah thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He ai sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and ▼
▼ Lit confusedrouted them.
15 Then the ak channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were ▼
▼ Or uncoveredlaid bare
At Your am rebuke, O Lord,
At the blast of the an breath of Your nostrils.
16 He ao sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of ap many waters.
17 He aq delivered me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were ar too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in as the day of my calamity,
But at the Lord was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a au broad place;
He rescued me, because av He delighted in me.
20 The Lord has aw rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the ax cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
21 For I have ay kept the ways of the Lord,
And have az not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all ba His ordinances were before me,
And I did not put away His bb statutes from me.
23 I was also ▼
▼ Lit complete; or having integrity; or perfect, bd blameless with Him,
And I be kept myself from my iniquity.
24 Therefore the Lord has bf recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.
25 With bg the kind You show Yourself kind;
With the ▼
▼ V 23, note 1blameless bi You show Yourself blameless;
26 With the pure You show Yourself bj pure,
And with the crooked bk You show Yourself ▼
▼ Lit twistedastute.
27 For You bm save an afflicted people,
But bn haughty eyes You abase.
28 For You bo light my lamp;
The Lord my God bp illumines my darkness.
29 For by You I can ▼
▼ Or crush a troop, br run upon a troop;
And by my God I can bs leap over a wall.
30 As for God, His way is ▼
▼ V 23, note 1, bu blameless;
The bv word of the Lord is tried;
He is a bw shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 For bx who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a by rock, except our God,
32 The God who bz girds me with strength
▼ Or has mademakes my way ▼
▼ Lit complete; or having integrity, cc blameless?
33 He cd makes my feet like hinds’ feet,
And ce sets me upon my high places.
34 He cf trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can cg bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me ch the shield of Your salvation,
And Your ci right hand upholds me;
And cj Your ▼
▼ Or condescensiongentleness makes me great.
36 You cl enlarge my steps under me,
And my ▼
▼ Lit ankles, cn feet have not slipped.
37 I co pursued my enemies and overtook them,
And I did not turn back cp until they were consumed.
38 I shattered them, so that they were cq not able to rise;
They fell cr under my feet.
39 For You have cs girded me with strength for battle;
You have ▼
▼ Lit caused to bow down, cu subdued under me those who rose up against me.
40 You have also made my enemies cv turn their backs to me,
And I ▼
▼ Or silenced, cx destroyed those who hated me.
41 They cried for help, but there was cy none to save,
Even to the Lord, but cz He did not answer them.
42 Then I beat them fine as the da dust before the wind;
I emptied them out as the mire of the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the db contentions of the people;
You have placed me as dc head of the nations;
A dd people whom I have not known serve me.
44 As soon as they hear, they obey me;
▼ Lit deceive me; i.e. give feigned obedience, df submit to me.
45 Foreigners dg fade away,
And dh come trembling out of their ▼
▼ Lit fastnessesfortresses.
46 The Lord dj lives, and blessed be dk my rock;
And exalted be dl the God of my salvation,
47 The God who dm executes vengeance for me,
And dn subdues peoples under me.
48 He do delivers me from my enemies;
Surely You dp lift me above those who rise up against me;
You rescue me from the dq violent man.
49 Therefore I will dr give thanks to You among the nations, O Lord,
And I will ds sing praises to Your name.
50 He gives great ▼
▼ I.e. victories; lit salvations, du deliverance to His king,
And shows lovingkindness to dv His anointed,
To David and dw his ▼
▼ Lit seeddescendants forever.
