A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

For the choir director; upon
Lit the hind of the morning
Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

1 b  My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
Or Why are You so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?
d  Far from my deliverance are the words of my
Lit roaring
f  groaning.
2O my God, I g  cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but
Lit there is no silence for me
I have no rest.
3Yet i  You are holy,
O You who
Or inhabit the praises
are enthroned upon k  the praises of Israel.
4In You our fathers l  trusted;
They trusted and You m  delivered them.
5To You they cried out and were delivered;
n  In You they trusted and were not
Or ashamed

6But I am a p  worm and not a man,
A q  reproach of men and r  despised by the people.
7All who see me
Or mock me
t  sneer at me;
I.e. make mouths at me
separate with the lip, they v  wag the head, saying,
Lit Roll; another reading is He committed himself
Commit yourself to the  Lord; x  let Him deliver him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

9Yet You are He who y  brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10Upon You I was cast z  from
Lit a womb
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 ab  Be not far from me, for
Or distress
trouble is near;
For there is ad  none to help.
12Many ae  bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of af  Bashan have encircled me.
13They ag  open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring ah  lion.
14I am ai  poured out like water,
And all my aj  bones are out of joint;
My ak  heart is like wax;
It is melted within
Lit my inward parts
15My am  strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And an  my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You ao  lay me
Lit to
in the dust of death.
16For aq  dogs have surrounded me;
Or An assembly
A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
Another reading is Like a lion, my...
They at  pierced my hands and my feet.
17I can count all my bones.
au  They look, they stare at me;
18They av  divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

19But You, O  Lord aw  be not far off;
O You my help ax  hasten to my assistance.
20Deliver my
Or life
soul from az  the sword,
My ba  only life from the
Lit paw
power of the dog.
21Save me from the bc  lion’s mouth;
From the horns of the bd  wild oxen You be  answer me.

22I will bf  tell of Your name to my brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
23 bg  You who fear the  Lord, praise Him;
All you
Lit seed
descendants of Jacob bi  glorify Him,
And bj  stand in awe of Him, all you
Lit seed
descendants of Israel.
24For He has bl  not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
Nor has He bm  hidden His face from him;
But bn  when he cried to Him for help, He heard.

25From You comes bo  my praise in the great assembly;
I shall bp  pay my vows before those who fear Him.
Or poor
afflicted will eat and br  be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will bs  praise the  Lord.
Let your bt  heart live forever!
27All the bu  ends of the earth will remember and turn to the  Lord,
And all the bv  families of the nations will worship before
Some versions read Him
28For the bx  kingdom is the  Lord’s
And He by  rules over the nations.
29All the
Lit fat ones
ca  prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
All those who cb  go down to the dust will bow before Him,
Even he who
Or did not
cd  cannot keep his soul alive.
Lit A seed
cf  Posterity will serve Him;
It will be told of the Lord to cg  the coming generation.
31They will come and ch  will declare His righteousness
To a people ci  who will be born, that He has performed it.
