Psalms 49

The Folly of Trusting in Riches.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

a Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all b inhabitants of the world,
Both c low and high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth will d speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be e understanding.
I will incline my ear to f a proverb;
g I will
Lit open up
express my i riddle on the harp.

Why should I j fear in days of adversity,
When the iniquity of my
Lit supplanters
foes surrounds me,
Even those who l trust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
No man can by any means m redeem his brother
Or give to God a n ransom for him—
For o the redemption of
Lit their
his soul is costly,
And he should cease trying forever
That he should q live on eternally,
That he should not
Or see corruption or the pit
s undergo decay.

10 For he sees that even t wise men die;
The u stupid and the senseless alike perish
And v leave their wealth to others.
11 Their
Some versions read graves are their houses
x inner thought is that their houses y are forever
And their dwelling places to all generations;
They have z called their lands after their own names.
12 But aa man in his
Lit honor
pomp will not endure;
He is like the
Or animals
beasts that
Lit are destroyed

13 This is the ae way of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who af approve their words.
Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interlude
14 As sheep they are appointed ah for
I.e. the nether world
Death shall be their shepherd;
And the aj upright shall rule over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for
I.e. the nether world
Sheol al to consume
Lit Away from his habitation
So that they have no habitation.
15 But God will an redeem my soul from the
Lit hand
power of
I.e. the nether world
For aq He will receive me. Selah.

16 Do not be afraid ar when a man becomes rich,
When the
Or wealth
glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies he will at carry nothing away;
Or wealth
glory will not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he av congratulates
Lit his soul
And though men praise you when you do well for yourself—
Lit You; or It
He shall ay go to the generation of his fathers;
They will never see az the light.
20  ba Man in his
Lit honor
pomp, yet without understanding,
Is bc like the
Or animals
beasts that
Lit are destroyed
