A Cry of Distress and Imprecation on Adversaries.1 Save me, O God,
For the b waters have ▼
▼ Lit come to the soulthreatened my life.
2I have sunk in deep d mire, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a ▼
▼ Lit flowing stream, f flood overflows me.
3I am g weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My h eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4Those i who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would ▼
▼ Or silencedestroy me k are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies;
l What I did not steal, I then have to restore.
5O God, it is You who knows m my folly,
And n my wrongs are not hidden from You.
6May those who wait for You not o be ashamed through me, O Lord ▼
▼ Heb YHWH, usually rendered LordGod of hosts;
May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,
7Because q for Your sake I have borne reproach;
r Dishonor has covered my face.
8I have become s estranged ▼
▼ Lit tofrom my brothers
And an alien to my mother’s sons.
9For u zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And v the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
10When I wept w in my soul with fasting,
It became my reproach.
11When I made x sackcloth my clothing,
I became y a byword to them.
12Those who z sit in the gate talk about me,
And I am the ▼
▼ Lit songs, ab song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord ac at an acceptable time;
O God, in the ad greatness of Your lovingkindness,
Answer me with ▼
▼ Or the faithfulness of Your salvationYour saving truth.
14Deliver me from the af mire and do not let me sink;
May I be ag delivered from ▼
▼ Lit those who hate memy foes and from the ▼
▼ Lit deep places of water, aj deep waters.
15May the ▼
▼ Lit stream, al flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the am pit shut its mouth on me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for an Your lovingkindness is good;
ao According to the greatness of Your compassion ap turn to me,
17And aq do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am ar in distress; answer me quickly.
18Oh draw near to my soul and as redeem it;
at Ransom me because of my enemies!
19You know my au reproach and my shame and my dishonor;
All my adversaries are ▼
▼ Or known to Youbefore You.
20Reproach has aw broken my heart and I am so sick.
And ax I looked for sympathy, but there was none,
And for ay comforters, but I found none.
21They also gave me ▼
▼ Or poison, ba gall ▼
▼ Or infor my food
And for my thirst they bc gave me vinegar to drink.
22May bd their table before them become a snare;
▼ Lit for those who are secure, bf when they are in peace, may it become a trap.
23May their bg eyes grow dim so that they cannot see,
And make their bh loins shake continually.
24 bi Pour out Your indignation on them,
And may Your burning anger overtake them.
25May their ▼
▼ Lit encampment, bk camp be desolate;
May none dwell in their tents.
26For they have bl persecuted him whom bm You Yourself have smitten,
And they tell of the pain of those whom bn You have ▼
▼ Lit piercedwounded.
27Add bp iniquity to their iniquity,
And bq may they not come into br Your righteousness.
28May they be bs blotted out of the bt book of life
And may they not be ▼
▼ Lit written, bv recorded with the righteous.
29But I am bw afflicted and in pain;
▼ Or Your salvation, O God, will set...May Your salvation, O God by set me securely on high.
30I will bz praise the name of God with song
And ca magnify Him with cb thanksgiving.
31And it will cc please the Lord better than an ox
Or a young bull with horns and hoofs.
32The cd humble ▼
▼ Some mss and ancient versions read will seehave seen it and are glad;
You who seek God cf let your heart ▼
▼ Or liverevive.
33For ch the Lord hears the needy
And ci does not despise His who are prisoners.
34Let cj heaven and earth praise Him,
The seas and ck everything that moves in them.
35For God will cl save Zion and cm build the cities of Judah,
That they may dwell there and cn possess it.
▼ Lit seed, cp descendants of His servants will inherit it,
And those who love His name cq will dwell in it.
