Zephaniah 1

Day of Judgment on Judah

1The word of the  Lord which came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of a  Josiah son of b  Amon, king of Judah: 2I will completely c  remove all things
From the face of the
Lit ground
earth,” declares the  Lord.
3I will remove e  man and beast;
I will remove the f  birds of the sky
And the fish of the sea,
And the
Or stumbling blocks
,
h  ruins along with the wicked;
And I will cut off man from the face of the
Lit ground
earth,” declares the  Lord.
4“So I will j  stretch out My hand against Judah
And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And I will k  cut off the remnant of Baal from this place,
And the names of the l  idolatrous priests along with the priests.
5And those who bow down on the m  housetops to the host of heaven,
And those who bow down and n  swear to the  Lord and yet swear by
Or their king; M.T. Malcam, probably a variant spelling of Milcom
,
p  Milcom,
6And those who have q  turned back from following the  Lord,
And those who have r  not sought the  Lord or inquired of Him.”

7
Lit Hush
,
t  Be silent before the Lord
Heb YHWH, usually rendered  Lord
 God!
For the v  day of the  Lord is near,
For the  Lord has prepared a w  sacrifice,
He has x  consecrated His guests.
8Then it will come about on the day of the  Lord’s sacrifice
That I will y  punish the princes, the king’s sons
And all who clothe themselves with z  foreign garments.
9And I will punish on that day all who leap on the temple threshold,
Who fill the house of their
Or Lord
lord with ab  violence and deceit.
10On that day,” declares the  Lord,
There will be the sound of a cry from the ac  Fish Gate,
A wail from the
I.e. a district of Jerusalem
,
ae  Second Quarter,
And a loud crash from the af  hills.
11Wail, O inhabitants of the
I.e. a district of Jerusalem
Mortar,
For all the
Or merchant people will
people of ai  Canaan will be silenced;
All who weigh out aj  silver will be cut off.
12It will come about at that time
That I will ak  search Jerusalem with lamps,
And I will punish the men
Who are
Lit thickening on their lees
,
am  stagnant in spirit,
Who say in their hearts,
‘The  Lord will an  not do good or evil!’
13Moreover, their wealth will become ao  plunder
And their houses desolate;
Yes, ap  they will build houses but not inhabit them,
And plant vineyards but not drink their wine.”

14Near is the aq  great ar  day of the  Lord,
Near and coming very quickly;
Listen, the day of the  Lord!
Lit There
In it the warrior at  cries out bitterly.
15A day of wrath is that day,
A day of au  trouble and distress,
A day of destruction and desolation,
A day of av  darkness and gloom,
A day of clouds and thick darkness,
16A day of aw  trumpet and battle cry
Against the ax  fortified cities
And the high corner towers.
17I will bring ay  distress on men
So that they will walk az  like the blind,
Because they have sinned against the  Lord;
And their ba  blood will be poured out like dust
And their bb  flesh like dung.
18Neither their bc  silver nor their gold
Will be able to deliver them
On the day of the  Lord’s wrath;
And bd  all the earth will be devoured
In the fire of His jealousy,
For He will be  make a complete end,
Indeed a terrifying one,
Of all the inhabitants of the earth.
