Βίβλος γενέσεως Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ υἱοῦ Δαυεὶδ υἱοῦ Ἁβραάμ.

^aThe book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, ^bthe son of David, ^cthe son of Abraham.

Ἁβραὰμ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰσαάκ· Ἰσαὰκ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰακώβ· Ἰακὼβ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰούδαν καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ·

^dAbraham was the father of Isaac, and ^eIsaac the father of Jacob, and ^fJacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

Ἰούδας δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Φαρὲς καὶ τὸν Ζαρὰ ἐκ τῆς Θάμαρ· Φαρὲς δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἐσρώμ· Ἐσρὼμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀράμ·

and ^gJudah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, ▼

Ἀρὰμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀμιναδάβ· Ἀμιναδὰβ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ναασσών· Ναασσὼν δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Σαλμών·

and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,

Σαλμὼν δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Βοὲς ἐκ τῆς ̔Ραχάβ· Βοὲς δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰωβὴδ ἐκ τῆς ̔Ρούθ· Ἰωβὴδ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰεσσαί·

and Salmon the father of Boaz by ⁱRahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,

Ἰεσσαὶ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Δαυεὶδ τὸν βασιλέα· Δαυεὶδ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Σολομῶνα ἐκ τῆς τοῦ Οὐρίου·

and ^jJesse the father of David the king.

And ^kDavid was the father of Solomon by ^lthe wife of Uriah,

Σολομὼν δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν ̔Ροβοάμ· ̔Ροβοὰμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀβιά· Ἀβιὰ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀσάφ·

and ^mSolomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph, ▼

▼ Asaph is probably an alternate spelling of Asa; some manuscripts Asa; also verse 8

Ἀσὰφ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰωσαφάτ· Ἰωσαφὰτ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰωράμ· Ἰωρὰμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ὀζείαν·

and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, ^oand Joram the father of Uzziah,

Ὀζείας δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰωάθαμ· Ἰωάθαμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἄχαζ· Ἄχαζ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἑζεκίαν·

and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

Ἑζεκίας δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Μανασσῆ· Μανασσῆς δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀμώς· Ἀμὼς δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰωσείαν·

and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, ▼

▼ Amos is probably an alternate spelling of Amon; some manuscripts Amon; twice in this verse

and Amos the father of Josiah,

Ἰωσείας δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰεχονίαν καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς μετοικεσίας Βαβυλῶνος.

and ^qJosiah the father of ^rJechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

Μετὰ δὲ τὴν μετοικεσίαν Βαβυλῶνος Ἰεχονίας ἐγέννησεν τὸν Σαλαθιήλ· Σαλαθιὴλ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ζοροβάβελ·

And after the deportation to Babylon: ^sJechoniah was the father of ^tShealtiel, ▼

Ζοροβάβελ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀβιούδ· Ἀβιοὺδ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἐλιακείμ· Ἐλιακεὶμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀζώρ·

and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor,

Ἀζὼρ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Σαδώκ· Σαδὼκ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἀχείμ· Ἀχεὶμ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἐλιούδ·

and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud,

Ἐλιοὺδ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἐλεάζαρ· Ἐλεάζαρ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ματθάν· Ματθὰν δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰακώβ·

and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob,

Ἰακὼβ δὲ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἄνδρα Μαρίας ἐξ ἧς ἐγεννήθη Ἰησοῦς ὁ λεγόμενος χριστός.

and Jacob the father of ^wJoseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

Πᾶσαι οὖν αἱ γενεαὶ ἀπὸ Ἁβραὰμ ἕως Δαυεὶδ γενεαὶ δεκατέσσαρες καὶ ἀπὸ Δαυεὶδ ἕως τῆς μετοικεσίας Βαβυλῶνος γενεαὶ δεκατέσσαρες καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς μετοικεσίας Βαβυλῶνος ἕως τοῦ χριστοῦ γενεαὶ δεκατέσσαρες.

So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to ^xthe Christ fourteen generations.

Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ ἡ γένεσις οὕτως ἦν· μνηστευθείσης τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Μαρίας τῷ Ἰωσήφ, πρὶν ἢ συνελθεῖν αὐτοὺς εὑρέθη ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα ἐκ πνεύματος ἁγίου.

Now the birth of ^yJesus Christ ▼

▼That is, legally pledged to be married

to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child ^acfrom the Holy Spirit.

Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, δίκαιος ὢν καὶ μὴ θέλων αὐτὴν δειγματίσαι, ἐβουλήθη λάθρα ἀπολῦσαι αὐτήν.

And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling ^adto put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐνθυμηθέντος ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος κυρίου κατ᾽ ὄναρ ἐφάνη αὐτῷ λέγων· Ἰωσὴφ υἱὸς Δαυείδ, μὴ φοβηθῇς παραλαβεῖν Μαριὰμ τὴν γυναῖκά σου· τὸ γὰρ ἐν αὐτῇ γεννηθὲν ἐκ πνεύματός ἐστιν ἁγίου.

But as he considered these things, behold, ^aean angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

τέξεται δὲ υἱόν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν· αὐτὸς γὰρ σώσει τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν.

She will bear a son, and ^afyou shall call his name Jesus, ^agfor he will save his people from their sins.”

Τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑπὸ κυρίου διὰ τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος·

^ahAll this took place ^aito fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

ἰδοὺ ἡ παρθένος ἐν γαστρὶ ἕξει καὶ τέξεται υἱόν, καὶ καλέσουσιν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐμμανουήλ, ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον· μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν ὁ θεός.

^aj“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name ^akImmanuel”
(which means, God ^alwith us).

Ἐγερθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὕπνου ἐποίησεν ὡς προσέταξεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου· καὶ παρέλαβεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,

καὶ οὐκ ἐγίνωσκεν αὐτὴν ἕως οὗ ἔτεκεν υἱόν, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν.

but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And ^amhe called his name Jesus.
