1 Chronicles 28:2-3

2Then King David rose to his feet and said: “Hear me, my brothers and my people. aI had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord and for the bfootstool of our God, and I made preparations for building. 3But God said to me, c‘You may not build a house for my name, for you are a man of war and have shed blood.’

1 Chronicles 29:1-17

Offerings for the Temple

1And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is dyoung and inexperienced, and the work is great, for ethe palace will not be for man but for the Lord God. 2So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of fonyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. 3Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God: 4 g3,000 talents
A  talent was about 75 pounds or 34 kilograms
of gold, of the gold of iOphir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house,
Septuagint; Hebrew houses
5and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself
Or ordaining himself; Hebrew filling his hand
today to the Lord?”

6Then lthe leaders of fathers’ houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and mthe officers over the king’s work. 7They gave for the service of the house of God 5,000 talents and 10,000 ndarics
A  daric was a coin weighing about 1/4 ounce or 8.5 grams
of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron.
8And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in the care of pJehiel the Gershonite. 9Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a qwhole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David Prays in the Assembly

10Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: rBlessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 sYours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 tBoth riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. uIn your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

14“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 vFor we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are wlike a shadow, and there is no abiding.
Septuagint, Vulgate; Hebrew hope, or prospect
16O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. 17I know, my God, ythat you test the heart and zhave pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you.

2 Chronicles 31:20-21

20Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, aaand he did what was good and right and faithful before the Lord his God. 21And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments, seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered.

2 Chronicles 34:19-33

19And when the king heard the words of the Law, abhe tore his clothes. 20And the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 21Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that has been found. For great is acthe wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

Huldah Prophesies Disaster

22So Hilkiah and those whom the king had sent
Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew lacks  had sent
went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter) and spoke to her to that effect.
23And she said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 24Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the curses that are written in the book that was read before the king of Judah. 25Because they have forsaken me and aehave made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands, therefore afmy wrath will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched. 26But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 27because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its inhabitants, and you have humbled yourself before me and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord. 28Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place and its inhabitants.’” And they brought back word to the king.

29 agThen the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30And the king went up to the house of the Lord, with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites, all the people both great and small. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord. 31And the king ahstood in his place aiand made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. 32Then he made all who were present in Jerusalem and in Benjamin join in it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33And Josiah took away ajall the abominations from all the territory that belonged to the people of Israel and made all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. All his days they did not turn away from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.

Encouragement to Give Generously

1We want you to know, brothers,
Or  brothers and sisters
about the grace of God that has been asgiven among the churches of Macedonia,
2for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and attheir extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3For they gave auaccording to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord,
