1 Kings 11:29-31

29And at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet aAhijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now Ahijah had dressed himself in a new garment, and the two of them were alone in the open country. 30Then Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, band tore it into twelve pieces. 31And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, cI am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes

Isaiah 20:1-4

A Sign Against Egypt and Cush

1In the year that dthe commander in chief, who was sent by Sargon the king of Assyria, came to eAshdod and fought against it and captured it— 2at that time the Lord spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and loose the sackcloth from your waist and take off your sandals from your feet,” and he did so, walking fnaked and barefoot.

3Then the Lord said, “As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years gas a sign and a portent against Egypt and Cush,
Probably Nubia
4so shall the iking of Assyria lead away the Egyptian captives and the Cushite exiles, both the young and the old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered, the nakedness of Egypt.

Jeremiah 13:1-11

The Ruined Loincloth

1Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and jput it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” 2So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist. 3And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, 4Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, kgo to the Euphrates and hide it there in la cleft of the rock.” 5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me. 6And after many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there mthe loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” 7Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took nthe loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was ospoiled; it was pgood for nothing.

8Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9Thus says the Lord: qEven so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great rpride of Jerusalem. 10This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, swho stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is tgood for nothing. 11For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, uthat they might be for me a people, va name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.

Jeremiah 18:2-12

2Arise, and go down to wthe potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” 3So I went down to xthe potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. 4And the vessel he was making of clay was yspoiled in the potter’s hand, and zhe reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.

5Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6“O house of Israel, aacan I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. abBehold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will acpluck up and break down and destroy it, 8and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, adturns from its evil, aeI will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. 9And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will afbuild and plant it, 10and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it. 11Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the Lord, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. agReturn, every one from his evil way, and ahamend your ways and your deeds.’

12“But they say, ai‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to ajthe stubbornness of his evil heart.’

Jeremiah 19

The Broken Flask

1Thus says the Lord, “Go, buy aka potter’s earthenware alflask, and take some of amthe elders of the people and some of anthe elders of the priests, 2and go out aoto the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you. 3You shall say, apHear the word of the Lord, aqO kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such disaster upon this place that arthe ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 4 asBecause the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; atand because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 auand have built the high places of Baal avto burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, awwhich I did not command or decree, nor did it come into my mind 6therefore, axbehold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when this place shall no more be called Topheth, or aythe Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7And in this place azI will make void the plans of Judah and Jerusalem, baand will cause their people to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. bbI will give their dead bodies for food to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth. 8And I will make this city bca horror, bda thing to be hissed at. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its wounds. 9 beAnd I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neighbor bfin the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies and those who seek their life afflict them.’

10“Then bgyou shall break bhthe flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11and shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, bias one breaks a potter’s vessel, bjso that it can never be mended. bkMen shall bury in Topheth because there will be no place else to bury. 12Thus will I do to this place, declares the Lord, and to its inhabitants, making this city bllike Topheth. 13The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judahbmall the houses on whose bnroofs offerings have been offered boto all the host of heaven, and bpdrink offerings have been poured out to other gods—shall be defiled bqlike the place of Topheth.’”

14Then Jeremiah came from brTopheth, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, bsand he stood in the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people: 15Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, btbecause they have stiffened their neck, burefusing to hear my words.”

Jeremiah 51:63-64

63When you finish reading this book, bv, bwtie a stone to it bxand cast it into the midst of the Euphrates, 64and say, byThus shall Babylon sink, to rise no more, because of the disaster that I am bringing upon her, bzand they shall become exhausted.’”
