7 ^athen I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, ^band the house that I have consecrated for my name I will cast out of my sight, ^cand Israel will become a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 8 And this house will become a heap of ruins. ^{▼▼Syriac, Old Latin; Hebrew will become high} Everyone passing by it will be astonished and will hiss, and they will say, ^e‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ 9 Then they will say, ‘Because ^fthey abandoned the Lord their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore the Lord has brought all this disaster on them.’”

2 Kings 17:17-20

17 ^gAnd they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings ^{▼▼Or made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire} and used ⁱdivination and ^jomens and ^ksold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. 18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but ^lthe tribe of Judah only.

19 ^mJudah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced. 20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them ⁿand gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

Jeremiah 3:8
