Samuel’s Farewell Address

1And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have obeyed ayour voice in all that you have said to me band have made a king over you. 2And now, behold, the king cwalks before you, dand I am old and gray; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day. 3Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before ehis anointed. fWhose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me

and I will restore it to you.”
4They said, “You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.” 5And he said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and hhis anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything iin my hand.” And they said, “He is witness.”

6And Samuel said to the people, j“The Lord is witness,
Septuagint; Hebrew lacks  is witness
who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
7Now therefore stand still that I may plead with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous deeds of the Lord that he performed for you and for your fathers. 8 lWhen Jacob went into Egypt, and the Egyptians oppressed them,

10 vAnd they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord wand have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. But now xdeliver us out of the hand of our enemies, that we may serve you.’ 11And the Lord sent yJerubbaal zand Barak

12And when you saw that adNahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, aeyou said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ afwhen the Lord your God was your king. 13And now agbehold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, ahthe Lord has set a king over you. 14If you will aifear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well. 15But ajif you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then akthe hand of the Lord will be against you and alyour king.

16Now therefore anstand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes. 17 aoIs it not wheat harvest today? apI will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that aqyour wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king.” 18So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, arand all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

19And all the people said to Samuel, asPray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.” 20And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet atdo not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21And audo not turn aside after avempty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22 awFor the Lord will not forsake his people, axfor his great name’s sake, because ayit has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. 23Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing azto pray for you, baand I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24 bbOnly fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider bcwhat great things he has done for you. 25But if you still do wickedly, bdyou shall be swept away, beboth you and your king.”

Luke 7

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant

1After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, bfhe entered Capernaum. 2Now a centurion had a servant
Greek bondservant; also verses 3, 8, 10
who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him.
3When the centurion
Greek he
heard about Jesus, bihe sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant.
4And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, bj“He is worthy to have you do this for him, 5for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us bkour synagogue.” 6And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, bldo not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. 7Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But bmsay the word, and let my servant be healed. 8For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9When Jesus heard these things, bnhe marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such bofaith.” 10And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

11Soon afterward
Some manuscripts The next day
he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.
12As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, bqthe only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. 13And when the Lord saw her, brhe had compassion on her and bssaid to her, Do not weep.” 14Then he came up and touched btthe bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say to you, buarise.” 15And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus
Greek he
bwgave him to his mother.
16Fear seized them all, and bxthey glorified God, saying, by“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and bzGod has visited his people!” 17And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

Messengers from John the Baptist

18 ca, cbThe disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one ccwho is to come, or cdshall we look for another?” 20And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one cewho is to come, or cfshall we look for another?’” 21In that hour cghe healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and chon many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22And he answered them, Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: cithe blind receive their sight, the lame walk, cjlepers

are cleansed, and clthe deaf hear, cmthe dead are raised up, cnthe poor have good news preached to them.
23And blessed is the one who is conot offended by me.”

24When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus
Greek he
began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What did you go out cqinto the wilderness to see? crA reed shaken by the wind?
25What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26What then did you go out to see? csA prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is he of whom it is written,

ct“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’
28I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29( cuWhen all the people heard this, and cvthe tax collectors too, they declared God just,
Greek  they justified God
cxhaving been baptized with cythe baptism of John,
30 czbut the Pharisees and dathe lawyers dbrejected dcthe purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

31“To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
33For John the Baptist has come ddeating no bread and dedrinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34The Son of Man has come dfeating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, dga friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35Yet dhwisdom is justified by all her children.”

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 diOne of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. 37 djAnd behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and dkwiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If dlthis man were dma prophet, he dnwould have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”

41“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred dodenarii, and the other fifty. 42 dpWhen they could not pay, he dqcancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; dryou gave me no water for my feet, but dsshe has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 dtYou gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to dukiss my feet. 46 dvYou did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47Therefore I tell you, her sins, dwwhich are many, are forgivenfor she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48And he said to her, dxYour sins are forgiven.” 49Then those who were at table with him began to say among
Or to
themselves, dzWho is this, who even forgives sins?”
50And he said to the woman, eaYour faith has saved you; ebgo in peace.”
