1 Samuel 14:13-15

13Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him. 14And that first strike, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, killed about twenty men within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre

15And there was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and even bthe raiders trembled, the earth quaked, and it became a very great panic.

2 Samuel 8

David’s Victories

1 jAfter this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took kMetheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

2 lAnd he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites mbecame servants to David and nbrought tribute.

3David also defeated oHadadezer the son of Rehob, king of pZobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates. 4 qAnd David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David rhamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots. 5 sAnd when the tSyrians of Damascus came to help uHadadezer king of vZobah, David struck down 22,000 men of the Syrians. 6Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians wbecame servants to David and brought tribute. xAnd the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went. 7And David took ythe shields of gold that were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8And from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took very much bronze.

9When Toi king of zHamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Hadadezer, 10Toi sent his son Joram to King David, to ask about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had often been at war with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze. 11 aaThese also King David dedicated to the Lord, together with the silver and gold that he dedicated from all the nations he subdued, 12from Edom, abMoab, acthe Ammonites, adthe Philistines, aeAmalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of afZobah.

13And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in agthe Valley of Salt. 14Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, ahand all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

David’s Officials

15So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people. 16 aiJoab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and ajJehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder, 17and akZadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and alSeraiah was secretary, 18and amBenaiah the son of Jehoiada was over

2 Chronicles 14:11-14

11And Asa apcried to the Lord his God, “O Lord, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O Lord our God, aqfor we rely on you, arand in your name we have come against this multitude. O Lord, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.” 12 asSo the Lord defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as atGerar, and the Ethiopians fell until none remained alive, for they were broken before the Lord and his army. The men of Judah
Hebrew They
carried away very much spoil.
14And they attacked all the cities around avGerar, awfor the fear of the Lord was upon them. They plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them.

2 Chronicles 16:1-9

Asa’s Last Years

1 axIn the aythirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah, azthat he might permit no one to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. 2Then Asa took silver and gold from the treasures of the house of the Lord and the king’s house and sent them to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who lived in Damascus, saying, 3“There is a covenant
Or treaty; twice in this verse
between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I am sending to you silver and gold. Go, break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, that he may withdraw from me.”
4And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and they conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel-maim, and all the bbstore cities of Naphtali. 5And when Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah and let his work cease. 6Then King Asa took all Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber, with which Baasha had been building, and with them he built Geba and Mizpah.

7At that time bcHanani bdthe seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, be“Because you relied on the king of Syria, and did not rely on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped you. 8Were not bfthe Ethiopians and bgthe Libyans a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet bhbecause you relied on the Lord, he gave them into your hand. 9 biFor the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those bjwhose heart is blameless
Or whole
toward him. blYou have done foolishly in this, for from now on bmyou will have wars.”

2 Chronicles 20:6-25

6and said, “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not bnGod in heaven? You borule over all the kingdoms of the nations. bpIn your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. 7Did you not, our God, bqdrive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of brAbraham your friend? 8And they have lived in it and have built for you in it a sanctuary for your name, saying, 9 bsIf disaster comes upon us, the sword, judgment,
Or  the sword of judgment
or pestilence, or famine, buwe will stand before this house and before you— bvfor your name is in this house—and cry out to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’
10And now behold, the men of bwAmmon and Moab and bxMount Seir, whom byyou would not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, bzand whom they avoided and did not destroy 11behold, they reward us caby coming to drive us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit. 12O our God, will you not cbexecute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but ccour eyes are on you.”

13Meanwhile all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14And cdthe Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15And he said, “Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you, ce‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, cffor the battle is not yours but God’s. 16Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of cgthe valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 chYou will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ ciDo not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, cjand the Lord will be with you.”

18Then Jehoshaphat ckbowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. 19And the Levites, of the clKohathites and the cmKorahites, stood up to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20And they rose early in the morning and went out into cnthe wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! coBelieve in the Lord your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.” 21And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him cpin holy attire, as they went before the army, and say,

cq“Give thanks to the Lord,
for his steadfast love endures forever.”
22And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set cran ambush against the men of csAmmon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. 23For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, ctthey all helped to destroy one another.

The Lord Delivers Judah

24When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the horde, and behold, there
Hebrew they
were dead bodies lying on the ground; none had escaped.
25When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their spoil, they found among them, in great numbers, goods, clothing, and precious things, which they took for themselves until they could carry no more. They were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much.
