David Anointed King

1 The Lord said to Samuel, ^a“How long will you grieve over Saul, since ^bI have rejected him from being king over Israel? ^cFill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, ^dfor I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

1 Samuel 16:12-13

12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ^eruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ^f“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took ^gthe horn of oil ^hand anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ⁱAnd the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

Isaiah 61:1-3

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

1 ^jThe Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has ^kanointed me

he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,

^pand the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;

^rthe oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
^sthat they may be called oaks of righteousness,
