6 When they came, he looked on ^aEliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, ^b“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, ^cbut the Lord looks on the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called ^dAbinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made ^eShammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, ^f“There remains yet the youngest, ^{▼▼Or smallest} but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, ^h“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ⁱruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ^j“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took ^kthe horn of oil ^land anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^mAnd the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

2 Samuel 7:8-16

8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, ⁿI took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince ^{▼▼Or leader} over my people Israel. 9 ^pAnd I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel ^qand will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place ^rand be disturbed no more. ^sAnd violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 ^tfrom the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And ^uI will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that ^vthe Lord will make you a house. 12 ^wWhen your days are fulfilled and ^xyou lie down with your fathers, ^yI will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 ^zHe shall build a house for my name, and ^aaI will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 ^abI will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, ^acI will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 ^adbut my steadfast love will not depart from him, ^aeas I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 ^afAnd your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. ^{▼▼Septuagint; Hebrew you} ^ahYour throne shall be established forever.’”

Psalms 78:68-72

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he ^ailoves.
69 He ^ajbuilt his sanctuary like the high heavens,
like the earth, which he has founded forever.
70 He ^akchose David his servant
and took him from the sheepfolds;
71 from ^alfollowing the nursing ewes he brought him
to ^amshepherd Jacob his people,
Israel his ^aninheritance.
72 With ^aoupright heart he shepherded them
and ^apguided them with his skillful hand.

Psalms 89:16-27

16 who exult in your ^aqname all the day
and in your righteousness are ^arexalted.
17 For you are ^asthe glory of their strength;
by your favor our ^athorn is exalted.
18 For our ^aushield belongs to the Lord,
our king to ^avthe Holy One of Israel.
19 ^awOf old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, ^{▼▼Some Hebrew manuscripts godly ones} and said:
“I have ^aygranted help to one who is ^azmighty;
I have exalted one ^bachosen from the people.
20 ^bbI have found David, my servant;
with my holy oil I have ^bcanointed him,
21 so that my ^bdhand shall be established with him;
my arm also shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not outwit him;
^bethe wicked shall not humble him.
23 I will ^bfcrush his foes before him
and strike down those who hate him.
24 My ^bgfaithfulness and my ^bhsteadfast love shall be with him,
and in my name shall his ^bihorn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand on ^bjthe sea
