1 Samuel 17:40-51

40Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.

41And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, awith his shield-bearer in front of him. 42And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, bruddy and handsome in appearance. 43And the Philistine said to David, “Am I ca dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh dto the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.” 45Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with ea javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, fwhom you have defied. 46This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. gAnd I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day hto the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, ithat all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47and that all this assembly may know that jthe Lord saves not with sword and spear. kFor the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

48When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. 51Then David ran and stood over the Philistine land took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, mthey fled.

14And Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says the Lord, By the servants of the governors of the districts.” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.” 15Then he mustered the servants of the governors of the districts, and they were 232. And after them he mustered all the people of Israel, seven thousand.

16And they went out at noon, while Ben-hadad nwas drinking himself drunk in the booths, he and the thirty-two kings who helped him. 17The servants of the governors of the districts went out first. And Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, “Men are coming out from Samaria.” 18He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive. Or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

19So these went out of the city, the servants of the governors of the districts and the army that followed them. 20And each struck down his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them, but Ben-hadad king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21And the king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and struck the Syrians with a great blow.

22Then othe prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Come, strengthen yourself, and consider well what you have to do, for pin the spring the king of Syria will come up against you.”
