Eli’s Worthless Sons

12Now the sons of Eli were aworthless men. bThey did not know the Lord. 13The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15Moreover, cbefore the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” 16And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.” 17Thus the sin of the young men was very great din the sight of the Lord, efor the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.

1 Samuel 2:29

29Why then do you fscorn
Hebrew kick at
my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’

Isaiah 56:10-12

10 hHis watchmen are blind;
they are all without knowledge;
they are all silent idogs;
they cannot bark,
dreaming, lying down,
loving to slumber.
11 jThe dogs have a mighty appetite;
they never have enough.
But kthey are shepherds who have no understanding;
they have all turned to their own way,
leach to his own gain, one and all.
12 mCome,” they say, “let me get wine;
let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
nand tomorrow will be like this day,
great beyond measure.”

Ezekiel 13:19

19You have profaned me among my people ofor handfuls of barley pand for pieces of bread, putting to death souls who should not die and keeping alive souls who should not live, by your lying to my people, who listen to lies.

Hosea 4:8-11

8 qThey feed on the sin
Or  sin offering
of my people;
they are greedy for their iniquity.
9 sAnd it shall be like people, like priest;
I will punish them for their ways
and repay them for their deeds.
10 tThey shall eat, but not be satisfied;
they shall play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
to cherish
11whoredom, wine, and new wine,
which utake away the understanding.

Micah 3:5

5 Thus says the Lord concerning vthe prophets
who lead my people astray,
wwho cryPeace
when they have something to eat,
but declare war against him
who puts nothing into their mouths.
