1 Samuel 2:27-32

The Lord Rejects Eli’s Household

27And there came aa man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, b‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? 28 cDid I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, dto wear an ephod before me? eI gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 29Why then do you fscorn
Hebrew kick at
my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’
30Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: h‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ ibut now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31Behold, jthe days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32Then kin distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, land there shall not be an old man in your house forever.

1 Samuel 3:11-14

11Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel mat which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12On that day I will fulfill against Eli nall that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 oAnd I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, pbecause his sons were blaspheming God,
Or  blaspheming for themselves
rand he did not restrain them.
14Therefore I swear to the house of Eli sthat the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”

1 Kings 14:7-15

7Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: tBecause I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over my people Israel 8and utore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, and yet you have not been vlike my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only that which was right in my eyes, 9but you have done evil above all who were before you and have gone and wmade for yourself other gods and xmetal images, provoking me to anger, and yhave cast me behind your back, 10therefore behold, I will bring harm upon the house of Jeroboam and zwill cut off from Jeroboam every male, aaboth bond and free in Israel, and abwill burn up the house of Jeroboam, as a man burns up dung until it is all gone. 11 acAnyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat, for the Lord has spoken it.”’ 12Arise therefore, go to your house. adWhen your feet enter the city, the child shall die. 13And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him aethere is found something pleasing to the Lord, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam. 14 afMoreover, the Lord will raise up for himself a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam today. And henceforth, 15the Lord will strike Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and agroot up Israel out of ahthis good land that he gave to their fathers and scatter them aibeyond the Euphrates,
Hebrew  the River
because they have made their akAsherim, provoking the Lord to anger.

1 Kings 17:1

Elijah Predicts a Drought

1Now Elijah the Tishbite, of alTishbe
Septuagint; Hebrew  of the settlers
in Gilead, said to Ahab, an“As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, aobefore whom I stand, apthere shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”

1 Kings 21:18-24

18Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in aqSamaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession. 19And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: ar“In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”’”

20Ahab said to Elijah, as“Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because atyou have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. 21Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and auwill cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. 22And I will make your house like avthe house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like awthe house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you axhave made Israel to sin. 23And of Jezebel the Lord also said, ay‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within azthe walls of Jezreel.’ 24 baAnyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.”

1 Kings 22:8

8And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, Micaiah the son of Imlah, but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said, “Let not the king say so.”

Isaiah 5:1-8

The Vineyard of the Lord Destroyed

1 Let me sing for my beloved
my love song concerning his vineyard:
My beloved had bba vineyard
on a very fertile hill.
2He dug it and cleared it of stones,
and planted it with bcchoice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
and hewed out a wine vat in it;
and bdhe looked for it to yield grapes,
but it yielded wild grapes.
3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem
and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
4 beWhat more was there to do for my vineyard,
that I have not done in it?
bfWhen I looked for it to yield grapes,
why did it yield wild grapes?
5 And now I will tell you
what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove bgits hedge,
and it shall be devoured;
Or grazed over; compare Exodus 22:5

biI will break down its wall,
and it shall be trampled down.
6I will make it a waste;
it shall not be pruned or hoed,
and bjbriers and thorns shall grow up;
bkI will also command the clouds
that they rain no rain upon it.
7 blFor the vineyard of the Lord of hosts
is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah
are his pleasant planting;
and he looked for justice,
but behold, bloodshed;
The Hebrew words for  justice and  bloodshed sound alike

for righteousness,
but behold, an outcry!
The Hebrew words for  righteous and  outcry sound alike

Woe to the Wicked

8 Woe to those who bojoin house to house,
who add field to field,
until there is no more room,
and you are made to dwell alone
in the midst of the land.
