1 Samuel 31:1-7

The Death of Saul

1 aNow the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain bon Mount Gilboa. 2And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down cJonathan and dAbinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3 eThe battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. 4 fThen Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these guncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, hfor he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword iand fell upon it. 5And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. 6Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together. 7And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived in them.

To the choirmaster: according to jShushan Eduth. A kMiktam
Probably musical or liturgical terms
of David; mfor instruction; when he nstrove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

1 O God, oyou have rejected us, pbroken our defenses;
you have been angry; qoh, restore us.
2You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;
rrepair its breaches, for it totters.
3 sYou have made your people see hard things;
tyou have given us uwine to drink that made us stagger.

Psalms 78:60-72

60He vforsook his dwelling at wShiloh,
the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
61and delivered his xpower to captivity,
his yglory to the hand of the foe.
62He zgave his people over to the sword
and aavented his wrath on his heritage.
63 abFire devoured their young men,
and their young women had no acmarriage song.
64Their adpriests fell by the sword,
and their aewidows made no lamentation.
65Then the Lord afawoke as from sleep,
like a strong man shouting because of wine.
66And he agput his adversaries to rout;
he put them to everlasting shame.
67 He rejected the tent of ahJoseph;
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
68but he chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he ailoves.
69He ajbuilt his sanctuary like the high heavens,
like the earth, which he has founded forever.
70He akchose David his servant
and took him from the sheepfolds;
71from alfollowing the nursing ewes he brought him
to amshepherd Jacob his people,
Israel his aninheritance.
72With aoupright heart he shepherded them
and apguided them with his skillful hand.

Judgment on the Whole Earth

1 Behold, aqthe Lord will empty the earth
Or land; also throughout this chapter
and make it desolate,
and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants.
2 asAnd it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest;
as with the slave, so with his master;
as with the maid, so with her mistress;
atas with the buyer, so with the seller;
as with the lender, so with the borrower;
auas with the creditor, so with the debtor.
3 avThe earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered;
awfor the Lord has spoken this word.
4 axThe earth mourns and withers;
the world languishes and withers;
the highest people of the earth languish.
5The earth lies aydefiled
under its inhabitants;
for azthey have transgressed the laws,
violated the statutes,
broken the everlasting covenant.
6Therefore baa curse devours the earth,
and its inhabitants bbsuffer for their guilt;
therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,
and few men are left.
7 bcThe wine mourns,
the vine languishes,
all the merry-hearted sigh.
8 bdThe mirth of the tambourines is stilled,
the noise of the jubilant has ceased,
the mirth of the lyre is stilled.
9No more do they drink wine bewith singing;
strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10 bfThe wasted city is broken down;
bgevery house is shut up so that none can enter.
11 bhThere is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine;
biall joy has grown dark;
the gladness of the earth is banished.
12Desolation is left in the city;
the gates are battered into ruins.
