1 Samuel 4

The Philistines Capture the Ark

1And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.

Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at aEbenezer, and the Philistines encamped at bAphek.
2The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. 3And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here cfrom Shiloh, that it
Or he
may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.”
4So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, ewho is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel fgave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. 6And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, “What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” And when they learned that the ark of the Lord had come to the camp, 7the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “A god has come into the camp.” And they said, “Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 8Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. 9 gTake courage, and be men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews has they have been to you; be men and fight.”

10So the Philistines fought, iand Israel was defeated, jand they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. 11 kAnd the ark of God was captured, land the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

The Death of Eli

12A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, mwith his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. 13When he arrived, nEli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out. 14When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, “What is this uproar?” Then the man hurried and came and told Eli. 15Now Eli was ninety-eight years old oand his eyes were set so that he could not see. 16And the man said to Eli, “I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today.” And he said, pHow did it go, my son?” 17He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” 18As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward qfrom his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

19Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, about to give birth. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. 20And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, r“Do not be afraid, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention. 21And she named the child sIchabod, saying, t“The glory has departed
Or gone into exile; also verse 22
from Israel!” because vthe ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
22And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, wfor the ark of God has been captured.”

1 Samuel 15

The Lord Rejects Saul

1And Samuel said to Saul, x“The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord. 2Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel yin opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. 3Now go and strike Amalek and zdevote to destruction
That is, set apart ( devote) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verses 8, 9, 15, 18, 20, 21
all that they have. Do not spare them, abbut kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

4So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. 6Then Saul said to acthe Kenites, “Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. adFor you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 aeAnd Saul defeated the Amalekites from afHavilah as far as agShur, which is east of Egypt. 8And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive ahand devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 aiBut Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves
The meaning of the Hebrew term is uncertain
and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.

10The word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 ak“I regret
See also verses 29, 35
that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and amhas not performed my commandments.” And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the Lord all night.
12And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, “Saul came to anCarmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.” 13And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, aoBlessed be you to the Lord. I have performed the commandment of the Lord.” 14And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?” 15Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, apfor the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.” 16Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”

17And Samuel said, aqThough you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ 19Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? arWhy did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?” 20And Saul said to Samuel, as“I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction. 21 atBut the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.” 22And Samuel said,

au“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, avto obey is better than sacrifice,
and to listen than the fat of rams.
23For rebellion is as the sin of divination,
and presumption is as iniquity and awidolatry.
Because axyou have rejected the word of the Lord,
ayhe has also rejected you from being king.”
24Saul said to Samuel, az“I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. 25Now therefore, please pardon my sin and bareturn with me that I may bow before the Lord.” 26And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. bbFor you have rejected the word of the Lord, bcand the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27 bdAs Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. 28And Samuel said to him, be“The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. 29And also the Glory of Israel bfwill not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” 30Then he said, “I have sinned; yet bghonor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, bhand return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God.” 31So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the Lord.

32Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully.
Or haltingly (compare Septuagint); the Hebrew is uncertain
Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33And Samuel said, bjAs your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the Lord bkin Gilgal.

34Then Samuel went blto Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in bmGibeah of Saul. 35 bnAnd Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, bobut Samuel grieved over Saul. bpAnd the Lord regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.
