Fasting and Prayer for Protection

21 gThen I proclaimed a fast there, at the river hAhava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, ito seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods.

Ezra 9:4-5

Joel 1:14

14 oConsecrate a fast;

Joel 2:12-18

Return to the Lord

and make not your heritage a reproach,
a byword among the nations.
Or  reproach, that the nations should rule over them

alWhy should they say among the peoples,
Where is their God?’”

The Lord Had Pity

18 amThen the Lord became jealous for his land
anand had pity on his people.

Jonah 3:5-10

5 aoAnd the people of Nineveh believed God. apThey called for a fast and aqput on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

The People of Nineveh Repent

6The word reached
Or had reached
the king of Nineveh, and ashe arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, atand sat in ashes.
7And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, au“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor avbeast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8but let man and awbeast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. axLet everyone turn from his evil way and from aythe violence that is in his hands. 9 azWho knows? God may turn and relent baand turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”

10When God saw what they did, bbhow they turned from their evil way, bcGod relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.
