1 Timothy 4

Some Will Depart from the Faith

1Now athe Spirit expressly says that bin later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to cdeceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2through the insincerity of dliars whose consciences are seared, 3 ewho forbid marriage and frequire abstinence from foods gthat God created hto be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4For ieverything created by God is good, and jnothing is to be rejected if it is kreceived with thanksgiving, 5for it is made holy lby the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

6 mIf you put these things before the brothers,
Or  brothers and sisters. The plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) refers to siblings in a family. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, adelphoi may refer either to men or to both men and women who are siblings (brothers and sisters) in God’s family, the church
you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have ofollowed.
7Have nothing to do with irreverent, psilly myths. Rather qtrain yourself for godliness; 8for while rbodily training is of some value, godliness sis of value in every way, as tit holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9The saying is utrustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10For to this end we toil and strive,
Some manuscripts  and suffer reproach
because we have our hope set on the living God, wwho is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11Command and teach xthese things. 12 yLet no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers zan example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 aaDo not neglect the gift you have, which was given you abby prophecy when the council of elders aclaid their hands on you. 15Practice these things, immerse yourself in them,
Greek be in them
so that aeall may see your progress.
16 afKeep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save agboth yourself and ahyour hearers.

1 Timothy 6

1 aiLet all who are under a yoke as bondservants
Or slaves (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface)
regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, akso that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled.
2Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are albrothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

amTeach and urge these things.
3If anyone anteaches a different doctrine and does not agree with aothe sound
Or healthy
words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching aqthat accords with godliness,
4 arhe is puffed up with conceit and asunderstands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for atcontroversy and for auquarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5and constant friction among people avwho are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, awimagining that godliness is a means of gain. 6But axgodliness aywith contentment is great gain, 7for azwe brought nothing into the world, and
Greek for; some manuscripts insert [it is] certain [that]
we cannot take anything out of the world.
8But bbif we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9But bcthose who desire to be rich fall into temptation, bdinto a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that beplunge people into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of bfall kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11But as for you, bgO man of God, bhflee these things. biPursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 bjFight the good fight of the faith. bkTake hold of the eternal life blto which you were called and about which you made bmthe good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 bnI charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, bowho in his testimony before
Or  in the time of
Pontius Pilate made bqthe good confession,
14to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until brthe appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15which he will display bsat the proper time—he who is btthe blessed and only Sovereign, buthe King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 bvwho alone has immortality, bwwho dwells in bxunapproachable light, bywhom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17As for the rich in bzthis present age, charge them canot to be haughty, nor cbto set their hopes on ccthe uncertainty of riches, but on God, cdwho richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18They are to do good, ceto be rich in good works, to be generous and cfready to share, 19thus cgstoring up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may chtake hold of cithat which is truly life.

20O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. cjAvoid the ckirreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

clGrace be with you.
The Greek for  you is plural
