Judgment on Edom

^jHas counsel perished from the prudent?
^kHas their wisdom vanished?
8 ^lFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of ^mDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
ⁿthe time when I punish him.
9 ^oIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave ^pgleanings?
^qIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 ^rBut I have stripped Esau bare;
^sI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and ^the is no more.
11 ^uLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
^vand let your widows trust in me.”
12 For thus says the Lord: ^w“If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, ^xwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 ^yFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that ^zBozrah shall become ^aaa horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 ^abI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
^ac“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock, ^{▼▼Or of Sela}
who hold the height of the hill.
Though you ^aemake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 ^af“Edom shall become a horror. ^agEveryone who passes by it will be horrified ^ahand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 ^aiAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their ^ajneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, ^akno man shall dwell there, ^alno man shall sojourn in her. 19 ^amBehold, ^anlike a lion coming up from ^aothe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him ^{▼▼Septuagint, Syriac them} run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. ^aqFor who is like me? ^arWho will summon me? ^asWhat shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against ^atEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of ^auTeman: ^avEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21 At the sound of their fall ^awthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22 Behold, ^axone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against ^ayBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart ^azof a woman in her birth pains.”

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ^be“Son of man, ^bfset your face ^bgagainst ^bhMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3 and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: ^biBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and ^bjI will stretch out my hand against you, ^bkand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 ^blI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5 Because ^bmyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword ^bnat the time of their calamity, ^boat the time of their final punishment, 6 therefore, ^bpas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; ^bqbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 ^brI will make Mount Seir a waste ^bsand a desolation, and I will cut off from it ^btall who come and go. 8 And I will fill ^buits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all ^bvyour ravines ^bwthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 ^bxI will make you a perpetual desolation, and ^byyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then ^bzyou will know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you said, ^ca‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and ^cbwe will take possession of them’—although the ^ccLord was there— 11 therefore, ^cdas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you ^ceaccording to the anger and ^cfenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And ^cgI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord.

^ch“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; ^cithey are given us to devour.’ 13 And ^cjyou magnified yourselves against me ^ckwith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord God: ^clWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you ^cmrejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, ^cnMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then ^cothey will know that I am the Lord.
