Jerusalem Captured and Burned

17 aTherefore he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged. He gave them all into his hand. 18 bAnd all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. 19 cAnd they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem and burned all its palaces with fire and destroyed all its precious vessels. 20He dtook into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, eand they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, 21to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had fenjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate git kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

And you shall go to Babylon.’ 4Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! lThus says the Lord concerning you: m‘You shall not die by the sword. 5You shall die in peace. nAnd as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall oburn spices for you pand lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”’ For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord.”

6Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem,

And they built siegeworks all around it. 5So the city was besieged till the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. 6On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land. 7Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled and went out from the city by night by the way of a gate between the two walls, by the king’s garden, and the Chaldeans were around the city. And they went in the direction of the Arabah. 8But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him. 9Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him. 10The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at ajRiblah. 11 akHe put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him in chains, and the king of Babylon took him to Babylon, and put him in prison altill the day of his death.

Ezekiel 24:1-14

The Siege of Jerusalem

1 amIn the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 anSon of man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day. 3And aoutter a parable to apthe rebellious house and say to them, Thus says the Lord God:

Set on aqthe pot, set it on;
pour in water also;
4put in it the pieces of meat,
all the good pieces, arthe thigh and the shoulder;
fill it with choice bones.
5Take the choicest one of the flock;
pile the logs
Compare verse 10; Hebrew  the bones
under it;
boil it well;
seethe also its bones in it.
6Therefore thus says the Lord God: atWoe to the bloody city, to authe pot whose corrosion is in it, and whose corrosion has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece, without making any choice.
Hebrew no lot has fallen upon it
7For the blood she has shed is in her midst; she put it on awthe bare rock; axshe did not pour it out on the ground to cover it with dust. 8To rouse my wrath, to take vengeance, I have set on the bare rock the blood she has shed, that it may not be covered. 9Therefore thus says the Lord God: Woe to the bloody city! ayI also will make the pile great. 10Heap on the logs, kindle the fire, boil the meat well, mix in the spices,
Or empty out the broth
and let the bones be burned up.
11Then set it empty upon the coals, that it may become hot, and its copper may burn, bathat its uncleanness may be melted in it, its corrosion consumed. 12 bbShe has wearied herself with toil;
The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
its abundant corrosion does not go out of it. Into the fire with its corrosion!
13On account of your unclean lewdness, because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed from your uncleanness, bdyou shall not be cleansed anymore till beI have satisfied my fury upon you. 14 bfI am the Lord. I have spoken; it shall come to pass; I will do it. I will not go back; bgI will not spare; bhI will not relent; biaccording to your ways and your deeds you will be judged, declares the Lord God.”
