Another name for Tiglath-pileser III (compare verse 29)
the king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave cPul a thousand talents
A  talent was about 75 pounds or 34 kilograms
of silver, that he might help him eto confirm his hold on the royal power.
20Menahem exacted the money from Israel, that is, from all the wealthy men, fifty shekels
A  shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams

Jeremiah 22:13-17

13 gWoe to him who builds his house by hunrighteousness,
and his upper rooms by injustice,
iwho makes his neighbor serve him for nothing
and does not give him his wages,
14who says, ‘I will build myself a great house
with spacious upper rooms,’
who cuts out windows for it,
paneling it with cedar
and jpainting it with vermilion.
15Do you think you are a king
because you compete in cedar?
Did not your father eat and drink
and kdo justice and righteousness?
lThen it was well with him.
16 mHe judged the cause of the poor and needy;
nthen it was well.
Is not this oto know me?
declares the Lord.
17But you have eyes and heart
only for your dishonest gain,
pfor shedding innocent blood,
and for practicing oppression and violence.”
